Today the hopes and dreams of Chicago Cub fans everywhere were crushed when multiple news outlets reported that the Chicago Cubs have traded away fan favorite Tony Campana to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Last week the speedy Campana was designated for assignment in order to make room for veteran outfielder Scott Hairston. Once the decision was made to designate Campana, the Cubs had 10 days to trade him or to prepare to lose him on waivers and get nothing back. The wiser decision was made to pull the trigger on a trade, so they could at least get something back for his lone skill set. In his two major league seasons, Campana stole 54 bases in only 184 games. If he could have ever learned to get on base at a half way decent percentage, that number would have been much higher, and the Cubs would not have been in the position of trying to trade him. In exchange for Campana, the Diamondbacks sent the Cubs two young pitchers out of the Dominican League, 17 year olds Erick Leal and Jesus Castillo. We wish Campana all the best in all his future endeavors. Hopefully he will learn how to hit with his new team.
