The Chicago White Sox wrapped up a successful homestand Sunday with a 4-3 victory over the Mariners. The long ball has been friendly to the White Sox this week and yesterday was no exception. Adam Dunn, Alex Rios, and Dayan Viciedo all had home runs, bringing the club’s total to 11 in just six games. While Dunn’s and Rios’ blasts were obviously important, it was Viciedo’s 10th inning shot to left field that ended the game and gave the Sox the series win. Team celebrates after Viciedo’s walk-off homer Opening Day starter Chris Sale took the mound today after a very impressive start last Monday. He wasn’t able to match the caliber of his first start, however. Giving up three runs on five hits, Sale brought his ERA to 1.84 after two appearances this season. The Mariner’s Michael Morse had a two-run shot in the first and Sale gave up another home run to Kendrys Morales in the sixth. He clearly didn’t have his best stuff since Sale isn’t usually a pitcher to give up multiple home runs in a game. Luckily, he held Seattle to three runs and managed to make it through seven full innings. Once again, it was the Sox’ bullpen strength that led them to a victory. After Sale’s departure, Lindstrom and Thornton each pitched a scoreless inning. Lindstrom’s inning included a timely strikeout with two men on after Beckham’s error. This was followed up by Addison Reed in the tenth, who also had a two-out strikeout with two men on, which quite possibly saved the game for Chicago. Since the game was won in the bottom of the tenth frame, Reed earned the win. This gives Reed a hand in all four of the Sox victories this year after he successfully closed the other three. The Sox have started this season off promisingly on both sides of the ball. While it does seem that they’re pretty reliant on the long ball, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. At least, not until the home runs stop coming. And you can’t ask much more from the pitching, only having one game where more than three runs were allowed. It’ll be interesting if they can keep up this pace and stay ahead of the rest of the AL Central. The Sox have a day off today for traveling before they commence a 10-day road trip against the Nationals, Indians, and Blue Jays.
