By claiming outfielder Alex Rios off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays, White Sox GM Kenny Williams is getting one of the few five-tool outfielders in baseball and Williams didn't have to trade anybody away to acquire him. Rios has a guaranteed five years and $60 million dollars remaining on his contract, a big-time contract in today’s market, but there are many factors that suggest that he is worth the money to Chicago.
First off, his batting average is likely to improve. Rios is hitting a career low .262 so far in 2009. His batting averages over the last three years were .302, .297, and .291. A future bounce-back is further supported by his relatively low batting average on balls in play number of .294. His career BABIP rate is .328, so if he returns to his norm, we could see a bump in BA of around 25 to 35 points.
Dips is BABIP can be concerning if there are correlating changes in line drive, fly ball, and ground ball percentages. Rios' 2009 line...
