The current contract Chone Figgins is under is not exactly astronomical, but that hasn’t stopped him from becoming one of the most overpaid players in baseball. Since signing a four-year, $36 million deal with the Mariners after the 2009 season, Figgins is hitting below .225. He finished last season with an average of .188 and is headed down the same path this year with a .185 average. Even worse, Figgins can’t even break up a double play by grabbing an opponent’s ankle. As you can see from the animation above that Lookout Landing passed along, Figgins reached out and grabbed Ian Kinsler’s ankle in the seventh to try to stop him from turning two. Kinsler made the turn anyway, and Michael Young came up with a beautiful pick at first to top it off. That’s why the Mariners are the Mariners and the Rangers are the Rangers. If Figgins hasn’t already hit rock bottom in Seattle, that should get him a bit closer. H/T Deadspin

Mariners recall Beavan, option Delabar

Right-handed pitcher Blake Beavan was recalled by the Mariners from Class AAA Tacoma and will start Tuesday night's game at Kansas City. Right-handed reliever Steve Delabar was optioned to Tacoma. Beavan, 23, began the season with the Mariners, but was sent down June 13 after posting a 3-6 record with a 5.92 ERA in 12 starts. In six starts with the Rainers, Beavan went 4...

Surprise: Mariners have AL's best road offense

There's no question that the Seattle Mariners are one of the lesser lights in the American League when it comes to scoring runs. Coming into this week, Seattle had scored 346 runs, just three more runs than the league's worst offense, the Oakland A's. But there are statistics inside statistics, and here's one: With the runs the Mariners scored Monday in a 9-4...

M's fan shares candy with Josh Hamilton

Back on Sunday afternoon, Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton sweet tooth got the best of him as he decided to do a little bit of snacking in the outfield during the Rangers win in Seattle. Watch as a Mariners fan hands him a box of Twizzlers and Josh is more than happy to take a couple: Your browser does not support iframes.

Felix Hernandez and Ichiro Suzuki aren’t going anywhere

According to Mariners' GM Jack Zduriencik (via Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports), the team plans to keep both Felix Hernandez and Ichiru Suzuki beyond the Trade deadline. He adds that they also plan to bring Ichiro back in 2013 even though he could be a free agent at the end of the season. “He's a big part of this team,” said Zduriencik. “He's a franchise player here...

Honoring Ichiro

For his first ten seasons, Ichiro Suzuki frustrated opposing pitchers as much as any other hitter in Major League Baseball. He was impossible to strike out, he could turn ugly slap-hits into singles, and despite (or because of) his disinterest in walking, he would still take a ball off his shoelaces and gap it for a double. He possessed a Rod Carew-like uncanny ability to square...

Mariners 7, Rangers 0

Felix Hernandez struck out 12 in a three-hitter and the Seattle Mariners beat Yu Darvish and the Texas Rangers 7-0 on Saturday night. Hernandez (7-5) limited the powerful Rangers lineup to three singles while improving to 3-0 with a 1.40 ERA in his last six starts. John Jaso homered for Seattle, which scored four times in the first inning. Michael Saunders and Kyle Seager had two...

Seattle Mariners: My 2012 successful second half to-do “laundry” list

NWSB Insider and Seattle Mariners blogger Britton Ransford tells us the laundry list of ideas he has for turning around the U.S.S. Mariners pathetic 2012 season. His ideas include cutting Chone Figgins, trading Felix Hernandez for assets, finding out if Jesus Montero is the every day catcher, even though Mike Zunino is now in the system, sending Justin Smoak to Tacoma for a bit,...

Mariners attack Darvish, King Felix dominates

So … I thought tonight’s game would be a good match-up.  And on paper, it was. But I forgot the troubles Yu Darvish has with the Mariners’ offense.  I don’t know why they give him fits, but I’m beginning to think it’s all mental.  Sigh. Right away, Darvish struggled.  Giving up four runs in the first inning. Two of them scored before he could log an out.  Seattle...
