The season is coming to an end. We only have a month and a half remaining until the playoffs begin and we will crown a new champion. Another highlight of this period is the customary handing out of awards. Soon names will be added to lists that include Nolan Ryan, Hank Aaron, and Willie Mays. One of the most prestigious of these awards is the Cy Young. Named for the (year) hall of famer, it is awarded to the season best overall pitcher. The Cincinnati Reds are making a lot of noise in this year’s NL Cy Young race. Closer Aroldis Chapman’s name is being tossed around as the first relief pitcher since Eric Gagne to win the award. While all of the acclaim is warranted, it takes away from the best pitcher in Cincinnati. Johnny Cueto has flown under the radar all season. But after today’s 3 hit 8 inning gem it is time we give credit where credit is due. It has been an unfathomable stretch for the Reds pitcher. Even before today he has been lighting it up, with a 2.44 ERA and 135 strikeo...

Reds prospect steals 146th base

Cincinnati Reds minor leaguer Billy Hamilton has set a record by stealing his 146th base of the season. Hamilton stole three bases for Double-A Pensacola in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday night against Montgomery in the Southern League. Boltin' Billy swiped 104 bases in the first half of the season with Class A Bakersfield, then was promoted. Hamilton broke the record...

Reds say Bailey not fatigued

Last Game Last night’s game was a good ol’ fashioned blow out, the likes of which the Reds have not been the victims of the whole season. The offense managed 5 runs against Roy Halladay, which is nothing to sneeze at, but Mike Leake could do nothing to restrain the Phillies, who touched him for 7 runs in 4.1 innings. To be fair to Leake, the Phillies line-up also got to the...

Billy Hamilton nearing record as Reds top prospects play on

Will he be "Record Holder" Billy Hamilton after tonight? Pensacola shortstop Billy Hamilton currently sits on 143 stolen bases. He only needs two to tie and three to break Vince Coleman's single season record of 145 steals, set in 1983 with Macon. It's really no longer a question of if or when, but how many bases Hamilton will steal. The Blue Wahoos have...

Game 122: Cubs 4, Reds 5

Despite 3 errors, the Reds pulled off a walk-off win against the Cubs yesterday to take 3 of the 4 games. Mat Latos had a nice outing. Through 8 innings he allowed 4 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits and 2 walks. But since the offense didn’t win it until … [visit site to read more]

Mesoraco suspension reduced to two games

Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco had his suspension reduced from three games to two, and he will serve the suspension Tuesday and Wednesday, the team announced Tuesday. Mesoraco was suspended for making contact with home-plate umpire Chad Fairchild during a July 30 argument. He then appealed the suspension and continued playing until the league ruled on his appeal. The Reds have...

Paul, Hanigan deliver in 9th, Reds beat Cubs

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Xavier Paul led off the ninth inning with a pinch-hit triple and Ryan Hanigan followed with a single Sunday, giving the Cincinnati Reds a 5-4 win over the Chicago Cubs. Paul lined the first pitch from Shawn Camp (3-6) over first base into the right-field corner. Hanigan hit the next pitch to left-center over the drawn-in Chicago outfield. The NL Central-leading...

Homer Happy Phils Crush Cincinnati, 12-5

Doc didn't have his best stuff tonight, but the stuff he had was still dominant. The Reds jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first. Jay Bruce doubled to bring home Zack Cozart, the first run, then Brandon Phillips scored on a groundout from former Phillie Scott Rolen. The Phils got on the board in the home half of the first courtesy of Ryan Howard's RBI single which...

The Phils’ bats come out to support Roy Halladay as they beat the first-place Reds, 12-5.

The Phils’ offense refuse to let up as they defeated the Reds, 12-5. The Reds took the lead in the first as, with the bases loaded, via singles by Zack Cozart, Chris Heisey and Brandon Phillips, and with noone out, Jay Bruce hits an RBI double, knocking in Cozart, giving the Reds a 1-0 lead, before Heisey is thrown out at the plate on a good throw by second baseman Chase Utley...

Reds downed by Cubs in Game 2, split DH

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Brett Jackson hit his first career home run to help Brooks Raley earn his first major league win, leading the Chicago Cubs to a 9-7 victory over the Cincinnati Reds and a split of their day-night doubleheader on Saturday. Starlin Castro had three hits and two RBIs as the Cubs rebounded after losing the first two in the four-game weekend series. David DeJesus added...

Nicknames for our Reds

I have a group of guys that I watch the Cincinnati Reds with. When we’re not watching them together, an endless string of texts seem to go back and forth between these guys and me. We have more inside jokes about the Reds roster than I can even begin to explain. We’ve also nicknamed a lot of the roster with affectionately stupid monikers. This is a group you’ll want to remember...

Reds-Phillies Preview

Mike Leake wasn't too sharp the last time the Cincinnati Reds faced the Philadelphia Phillies, and the result was a historic defeat. But if Leake has the same stuff as he did in his last start, the result could be a lot different this time. The NL Central-leading Reds will try to end a six-game losing streak to the Phillies on Monday night in Philadelphia as these teams square...

Leake, Reds stumble to open series in Philly

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- John Mayberry Jr. hit a two-run homer and Ryan Howard and Erik Kratz had solo shots to back Roy Halladay, helping the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Cincinnati Reds 12-5 on Monday night. Halladay (7-7) wasn't sharp, allowing five runs and 10 hits in seven innings. But the offense bailed out the two-time Cy Young Award winner. Domonic Brown hit a go-ahead...
