Legend of Cecilio Guante:
A stellar tribute
Away from the glittertastics of the Miami Marlins ballpark opening on Wednesday night – a spectacle that seemed more fitting the Vegas strip than the stateside opening of the MLB season – a few teams got it right during their respective debuts today. My Mets and their PR folks did well by Gary Carter with this gesture. And the Texas Rangers found a fitting way to turn a tremendously sad memory into a moving and lasting tribute in Arlington.
Most of us recall the fan that fell to his death at Rangers Ballpark last summer reaching for a foul ball tossed into the stands by Texas superstar Josh Hamilton. It was even more harrowing given his six-year old son was by his side. The Rangers organization did a lot of good things following the incident. Today, the unveiled at statue outside the stadium that pays special tribute to a father and a son who loved the game and their team. If nothing else, it helps ensure Shannon Stone (and his son Connor) won’t be forgotten. Class act. Well done, Texas.

Shannon Stone was killed when he fell over a railing during a game in July 2011 while attempting to catch a ball thrown to him by Rangers left fielder Josh Hamilton.

Shannon Stone, the Rangers fan who passed away while attempting to catch a ball for his son, has been forever immortalized outside of the Ballpark at Arlington. The Rangers unveiled a statue of Stone yesterday, featuring the late firefighter holding hands with his son Cooper.
The statue is a fitting tribute to Stone, who passed away on July 8th of last year while reaching over the...
One of the most heartbreaking stories last season was the one of Shannon Stone, a Texas Rangers fan, who was just enjoying the day at the ballpark with his six-year-old son. He was about to retrieve what we all hope for when we go to games with our fathers or our sons, an official Major League Baseball. As you know, he reached out for it when Josh Hamilton threw it into the...
We've arrived, kids. A long spring training and a longer off-season is finally over. Baseball is here, and not a moment too soon. I can't tell you how long the euphoria of an undefeated season in first place will last (my guess is two days), but baseball is here. And with baseball is at least a chance to win. We've lost too much and too many this offseason. We lost Dana...

The New York Mets may not have had Brazilian feather dancers or Muhammad Ali in the luxury boxes at their 2012 opening day festivities at Citi Field, but a simple dedication to former-catcher Gary Carter may help brace Mets fans for what could be a trying season and put things into perspective.
Carter, who was more familiarly know as "The Kid" died of brain cancer on...
I suppose you could ask for a nicer day, but that would be greedy. It’s bright and sunny, a crispness in the air. The forecast is for more of the same this afternoon at Citi Field.
There should be two rules in baseball: Opening Day has beautiful weather and the home team wins.
Opening Day, it is written, is about renewal, about fresh starts, about optimism. It’s also about going...
