The Indians announced this morning that Josh Tomlin has been activated from the 60 day disabled list but will remain in AAA Columbus. The Cleveland Indians today recalled  RHP Josh Tomlin from his 30-day rehab assignment, activated him from the 60-day Disabled List and optioned him to AAA Columbus.” Josh Tomlin pitched for the Clippers on Friday, 12 months after Tommy John surgery. In his first outing, Tomlin pitched 5 solid innings but gave up 7 hits, 2 strike outs, and 3 earned runs in the fourth inning. Tomlin’s surgery was Aug. 22, 2012. He set a goal to return to the majors exactly one year later, and here we are discussing the return of the power pitcher to the big leagues. According to Sheldon Ocker of the Akron Beacon Journal, Tomlin could be less than two weeks away from a return to Cleveland, although Terry Francona’s plan all along is to have him pitch through the remainder of the minor league season and then evaluate his progress. “Anything they need from me, I’ll do,” said Tomlin, who went 12-7 with a 4.25 ERA in 26 starts for the Tribe in 2011. Terry Francona was quoted as saying “Hopefully, Josh will get two more starts before the minor-league season is over, and we can decide what we want to do,’’ The team is hoping for Tomlin to get at least two more starts under his belt and get his pitch count up to 90 before his return to the big leagues. Francona has stated multiple times that he does not see Tomlin in a bullpen role with the Tribe because it would “cause too much stress on his arm day in and day out”. MLB teams are allowed to expand their active rosters to 40 players on September 1. The Columbus Clippers will play their last game of the season at home on Monday, September 2 against the Toledo Mudhens. The starters for the Indians have been pitching well since August 14, the Tribe has a record of 6-3. Tomlin is a great addition but who’s place will he take?
