Many wondered if the 2013 A’s could recapture the mojo from their 2012 playoff run. The A’s came out of the box strong, but have cooled off since, suffering a four game sweep against the surprising 18-14 Indians. Mark Reynolds hit his AL leading 11th home run and added a double. The Angels managed to avoid losing the series to the Astros, thanks to a double and home run from Josh Hamilton and the rare five out save from Ernesto Frieri.Athletics 2 v Indians 9: Bartolo Colon took the loss for the Athletics; he has given up 14 earned runs in his last 15.1 innings pitched. Scott Kazmir picked up his second win of the season, pitching six innings and striking out ten batters. Jason Kipnis, Nick Swisher, and Mark Reynolds all hit home runs for the Indians. Mark Reynolds leads the AL in home runs with 11. Josh Donaldson hit his fourth home run of the year for the Athletics (Cleveland swept the series 4-0).Yankees 3 v Rockies 1: This game was postponed in the 5th inning, but was able to be finished later in the day. CC Sabathia had yielded only one hit and one walk through four innings. Mariano Rivera pitched a perfect ninth for his 13thsave. Robinson Cano hit his ninth home run and Vernon Wells had two hits. Carlos Gonzalez notched his 19th RBI (New York won the series 2-1).Tigers 4 v Nationals 5: Doug Fister got roughed up, giving up five runs, eight hits, and one walk in only three innings. Dan Haren gave up four earned runs in six innings to earn the win. Rafael Soriano picked up his 12th save of the season. Denard Span and Austin Jackson both had doubles (Washington swept the series 2-0).Royals 6 v Orioles 2: Jeremy Guthrie pitched six innings and gave up on earned run to earn the win for the Royals. Alex Gordon, Mike Moustakas, and Eric Hosmer all homered for the Royals. Chris Davis hit his tenth home run of the season and Matt Wieters and Nick Markakis added doubles (Baltimore won the series 2-1).Twins 5 v Red Sox 3: Kevin Correia notched his fourth win and Glen Perkins saved his eighth game for the Twins. John Lackey pitched seven innings and gave up five runs, but only one was earned. Oswaldo Arcia hit a triple and a home run for the Twins. Will Middlebrooks, Shane Victorino, and Mike Napoli hit doubles for the Red Sox (Minnesota won the series 3-1).Pirates 2 v Mets 3: Bobby Parnell picked up his fourth win as a reliever and Jason Grilli suffered his first loss. Dillon Gee pitched five innings of one run ball, giving up five hits and two walks while striking out three. Jeff Locke gave up one run in six innings, striking out three. Pedro Alvarez homered for the Pirates. Ike Davis doubled for the Mets (New York leads the series 1-0).Blue Jays 4 v Rays 5: The Rays won this game in the tenth on the unusual walk-off walk. RA Dickey gave up two earned runs in six innings, but was outdueled by David Price, who gave up two earned runs in eight innings. Jose Bautista hit a double for the Blue Jays. Evan Longoria hit two doubles for the Rays and Ben Zobrist smacked a triple (The series split 2-2).Angels 6 v Astros 5: Josh Hamilton hit a double and a home run. Brendan Harris added another home run for the Angels. Jose Altuve had three hits for the Astros and Matt Dominguea and Jason Castro added doubles. Ernesto Frieri collected a five out save, striking out three batters in the process. (Houston won the series 2-1).Phillies 1 v Diamondbacks 2: Patrick Corbin outdueled Cole Hamels, pitching 6.1 innings of one run ball, giving up only four hits and two walks, while striking out four. Cole Hamels pitched six innings of two run ball, but gave up an unusual five walks and six hits, while only striking out three. Dominic Brown hit a double for the Phillies. Didi Gregorius, Gerardo Parra, and Cody Ross hit doubles for the Diamondbacks. Heath Bell collected his fourth save with JJ Putz on the DL (Arizona leads the series 1-0).Braves 6 v Giants 3:Julio Teheran collects the win and quality start, tossing seven innings of three run ball, scattering seven hits and notching three strike outs. Ryan Vogelsong continues to struggle, giving up six runs on seven hits and three walks in only 4.1 innings. Jordan Schafer and Justin Upton hit triples and Brian McCann hit his first home run of the year for the Braves. Brandon Belt, Marco Scutaro, and Brandon Crawford all hit doubles for the Giants. Craig Kimbrel recorded his 11th save of the season (Atlanta leads the series 1-0).
