The Philadelphia Phillies have found their closer, and appear to be a physical away from making the deal official, according to CSNPhilly.com's Jim Salisbury. On Friday afternoon, news broke that the Phillies have reached an agreement with free agent closing pitcher Jonathan Papelbon that will pay the right-hander nearly $50 million over four years. The deal all by slams the door on incumbent closer Ryan Madson, who, only days before, appeared to have a deal in place to stay with the Phillies. Those plans, it seems, fell through, leaving the home-grown Madson to find the employ of another team. If the reports are true, and all indications point in the affirmative, then the Phillies are pushing more of their chips into the middle, as spending that kind of money on a relief pitcher is, well, silly. That's not to say that Papelbon won't be a great addition to the Phillies, it's just that effective relief pitchers are a dime a dozen, and are only really valued because...

Who is the Best Replacement for Jonathan Papelbon as Red Sox Closer?

Jonathan Papelbon set the market price for a crowded field of free-agent closers when he inked a reported four-year, $50 million deal with the Phillies. Heath Bell doesn't boast Papelbon's body of work. Ryan Madson became...

Phillies Agree With Jonathan Papelbon…We Think

Jim Salisbury is reporting on Twitter that… The Phils and Papelbon have reached agreement sources tell CSNPhilly.com. Pending physical. My initial reaction is… it better be for less than 4 years, $44 million, because I would have greatly preferred to retain Madson. Papelbon was extremely dominant his first 4 years as a closer, but somewhat shaky the last two. On the plus side...

Notes From the Axis of Evil

The rest of the N.L. East, that is.Jonathan Papelbon, he of the A-plus stuff, advancing maturity, and celebratory antics, became a Philadelphia Phillie on Friday, pending a physical. Hey, don't expect me to moan and ***** every time Cinco Ocho screams like a loon after a save. I root for a team that employed Frankie Rodriguez, for crying out loud. Don't want to see it? Score...

Your Morning Dump...Where we try to figure out the closer situation

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. But with Papelbon agreeing to a new, rich deal with the Phillies on Friday, the scrutiny on Bard next spring will be intense. Even though the Red Sox likely will try to bring in another closer via...

Another Near Done Deal

Making News

The Ryan Madson signing saga is a good example of baseball people trying to make news in a slow week. What struck me odd about the early stories was the money, four years for $44 million. As a closer, why should Ryan take less average money than Rafael Soriano, the Yankees set up man. Like it or not, the Phillies are now the Yankees of the National League, and ball players are...
