Zack Wheeler lasted just five innings as the Kansas City Royals beat the New York Mets 6-2 to win the three-game interleague series.
Wheeler, now 4-2, lost for the first time in six starts. He gave up four runs — three earned — and issued five walks in his ninth start of the season. The young righty seemed to come unglued in the fifth after Marlon Byrd lost a ball in the sun and John Buck let a couple of pitches get by him. He walked three in that inning, threw a wild pitch, a passed ball, and when it was all over three runs had crossed the plate.
Wheeler also let up another home run, this time to Mike Moustakas who drilled a fast ball over the wall in right-center. Wheeler is now 1-2 with a 5.76 ERA at Citi Field and has failed to go into the seventh inning in seven of his nine starts.
Terry Collins was very dissatisfied with Wheeler’s performance and ripped into him after the game, saying that it was time for Wheeler to start bearing down and taking control of the game. Despite t...
BEST OF MAXIM
Ike Davis seems to be coming around in recent weeks. Last night, Davis went 3-for-3 with a walk and since returning from his demotion to Triple-A Las Vrgas on July 5, he is hitting .269 (18-67) with 17 walks in 23 games with a .417 on-base percentage ranking him fifth in the National League.
Since the All Star break, the Mets first baseman has caught fire and is batting .317...
Adam Rubin of ESPN New York emailed Paul DePodesta a few questions regarding a few of the Mets prospects and regarding Wilmer Flores they had the following exchange:
Asked if Wilmer Flores remaining in the minors is fielding-related, DePodesta wrote: “Wilmer played some first base largely because of the ankle injury. He had been back at second base the last couple of games now...
Travis d’Arnaud was blown away after catching five scoreless innings from Noah Syndergaard during Sunday’s 6-0 win for Binghamton.
“What can I say about an outing like that?” said d’Arnaud, who is coming back from a broken foot suffered in April. “He had an absolutely electric fastball, his curveball was pretty devastating and his changeup — I didn’t even know he...
Last night, the Mets were dealt a big blow in the bottom of the tenth inning when third baseman David Wright left the game against the Royals in the bottom of the 10th inning, after coming up lame trying to run out a grounder to second base.
As he crossed first base, Wright grabbed his right leg while grimacing in pain. As he limped and hopped on one leg, manager Terry Collins and...
David Aardsma nearly lost the game for the New York Mets on Friday night. The reliever entered the game in the 9th inning with a 2-1 lead and allowed the Kansas City Royals to tie it up, resulting in a blown save. Fortunately, the Mets won anyway on a walk-off homer from Eric Young Jr. [...]

The Mets are still reeling after David Wright injured his hamstring on Friday night. However, there appears to be some relief on the way in the form of a promising prospect that will get an opportunity to play.
Infielder Wilmer Flores will be brought up to the major league club on...
Welcome to this week’s edition of Boom or Bust! Today, some of the writers here at MMN will be debating whether or not the 2011 first round pick for the New York Mets, Brandon Nimmo, will end up being a successful major leaguer. Starting 2013 with Low-A Savannah, the outfielder got off to a great start, hitting .322/.421/.433 in the season’s first month. Since then, injuries...
The very young Gavin Cecchini runs into a lot of criticism from fans because of the fact that he was drafted so high for the New York Mets — and perhaps rightfully so. It is unfortunate, however, that one so young faces such pressure to perform — although this could be said about a lot of our young prospects that we drafted out of high school.
Cecchini had been struggling with...
Both suspended Mets players issued statements a short while ago:
Today, I was notified by the Commissioner of Major League Baseball that I have been suspended for 50 games for violation of the Joint Drug Agreement. Out of respect for the Mets’ organization, my teammates, and my family, I have decided to accept this suspension and not exercise my rights under the Basic...
New Yorkers have a reputation for being tough, and one fan at Saturday's Mets game at Citi Field looked big and bad enough to kill a rock and put a brick in the hospital.
That is, until he tried to open a bottle of water.
Once the cameras caught him, it was must-see TV. David Wright could've been having an 18-pitch at-bat against Mariano Rivera, and the announcers wouldn...
Never let Terry Collins go to Atlantic City.
Here's why: Because he's the type of guy that will put all of his chips on 31 black, win, and then put all of his winnings back on 31 black for the next roll and lose everything. (Forgive me if I referenced that episode of South Park before.) Of course, I'm referring to Terry "One Batter Too Late" Collins, who...
