In a season of severe ups and downs, there have been very few things that have stayed constant and productive when it comes to the Colorado Rockies. Of course Troy Tulowitzki is one of the best players in the league and everyone expects greatness from him, but the Rockies have gotten some great production from a player that many did not anticipate. Outfielder Charlie Blackmon has jumped on the scene this year and is cementing his place in the Rockies’ lineup. His play since the season has started is nothing short of brilliant and he is currently the leading vote-getter in All-Star votes among all National League outfielders. Sporting a grizzly beard and a bright smile, Charlie is looking more and more like the center fielder of the future for the Colorado Rockies Dexter Fowler left for Houston leaving a gap in Centerfield Last season, the Colorado Rockies had a very solid outfield so the starters saw a lot of time and there was little to no room for players trying to make a name for themselves. Charlie Blackmon was fighting for time in the majors and his lack of consistency made him a “tweener” when it came to triple-A or the major leagues. Blackmon played a total of 82 games for the Rockies last year and posted numbers nowhere near what he has been able to produce though this point of the 2014 season. Last year, Dexter Fowler was a gazelle in centerfield and Rockies fans around the country were convinced they were seeing the outfield of the future. One trade to Houston later and Dexter is in an Astros jersey, leaving a vacancy in one of the game’s most important positions. Blackmon stepped in and the outfield didn’t skip a beat. Blackmon covers a lot of ground in center and has made a couple catches this season that have found themselves on highlight reels around the country. There was such stability with Dexter in center last year that Rockies fans thought it couldn’t get any better but this year, despite the team’s recent drought, Blackmon is doing it all. Blackmon hopes to keep the hot start with his bat Not only is Charlie Blackmon playing a great center field this year, but also he is staying in the big leagues by way of his bat. In the first couple months of the season you couldn’t look at a batting category without seeing Charlie Blackmon’s name close to the top of the list. He has cooled off a little since getting into the middle of the year but Blackmon is still posting very impressive stats in the batters box. Currently, Blackmon is hitting .301 with 12 homers and 44 RBIs. He is the leader on the team in RBIs and sits only behind Troy Tulowitzki for home runs. Hitting lead off, Blackmon is expected to get on base and create chances for hitters later in the lineup and he has done just that. In a league like the MLB where productivity is the difference between stability in the majors and questions in the minors, Charlie Blackmon has exceeded expectations through the first half of the season. The Rockies have had a rough last couple weeks that have included a large losing streak and a few injuries to compliment that. Through all of the trials and tribulations the 2014 Rockies have seen thus far, Blackmon has been on of the constant players that can give them a chance to win on any given day. With any luck, The Rockies can stay in the hunt until everyone is healthy and just maybe make a push for the playoffs when the time comes. Blackmon’s play up to this point only makes Rockies fans more optimistic. The post Colorado Rockies: Why Charlie Blackmon has been the biggest surprise appeared first on isportsweb.
