Meet Kyle Lohse - the man without a team. With Spring Training already underway, there has been absolutely no buzz regarding Lohse signing with a team.  In fact, most of the buzz has been teams denying interest in Lohse.  So far, the Rangers have denied interest, the Rockies are not a fit, the Cubs are not a fit, the Pirates are not interested, the Braves are not interested,  you can count the Phillies out, and the Nationals, Angels, Brewers, Red Sox and Cardinals are all distancing themselves from Lohse. It seems kinda hard to believe that a pitcher who went 16-3 with a 2.86 ERA last year would have difficulty finding a job.  But, considering he's tied to draft pick compensation and owns a career 4.45 ERA in the majors, you can understand why some teams would hesitate to give him a 3 or 4 year deal. Despite the loss of Chris Carpenter, Cardinals GM John Mozeliak said he doesn't expect to add starting pitching.  However, could that change if Shelby Miller'...

Rafael Furcal injury highlights Cardinals lack of quality options at short

The latest news out of Spring Training is that Cardinals short stop Rafael Furcal is hurting, again. According to Derrick Gould of the Post-Dispatch, Furcal continues to be hampered by pain in his right elbow. As Furcal put it himself, "It still hurts. A lot." Of course, by now we should expect an injury to Furcal.  Last year he missed 41 games, he missed 75 in 2011...

Not So Quick – Cards Miller Cleared To Throw

St. Louis Cardinal fans and beat writers jumped quickly to the conclusion that Shelby Miller was “out of the competition” for a spot in the opening rotation due to reported shoulder stiffness on Wednesday. News broke across the internet out of Jupiter, Florida on Wednesday that 22 year old Cardinal prospect Shelby Miller had sat out throwing drills on Wednesday with “shoulder...

Former players back to help Cardinals

JUPITER, Fla. Cardinals Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith laughed when asked who would have a higher batting average if they still played, he or former Cardinals outfielder Willie McGee. "Willie probably would," Smith said. "He was that guy that hit .290 on the road and .290 at home, so he'd probably come out and still hit about .260. I'd hit about .250...

Furcal slowed by elbow pain

JUPITER, Fla. Cardinals shortstop Rafael Furcal has been slowed by renewed pain and discomfort in his right elbow and was a limited participant the past two workouts. Furcal missed the final month of the regular season and playoffs last year with a partially torn ligament in his elbow. He was limited to left-handed swings Thursday and Friday and didnt put much effort into throws...

Trio of outfielders compete for roster spot

JUPITER, Fla. The story of how Adron Chambers came to impress the Cardinals during a pre-draft workout in Memphis, Tenn., in 2007 brings comparisons to the scene from the baseball comedy Major League. Chambers' bus from Pensecola arrived in Memphis after the workout had already started, causing him to quickly put on his cleats and run out to the field to participate in the...

Local paper against Peoria Chiefs bailout

The other day, I wrote about the financial difficulties of the St. Louis Cardinals’ Class-A affiliate, the Peoria Chiefs. In a Thursday editorial, the Peoria Journal Star shared more information about the situation without any more insight about exactly what the club’s owners might be asking for. The position of the paper was clear – the only additional help they believe should...

Cardinals' Rafael Furcal still experiencing pain in elbow

Although Rafael Furcal has indicated that he would be ready to go on Opening Day and would be ready to play this season, his elbow is still clearly bothering him.  The veteran shortstop felt a pop last season and spent the end of the year on the disabled list.  Fortunately, he did not have to undergo surgery, but he says the pain is still there. According to Jennifer Langosch...

50 years ago, the Grapefruit League was far less complicated

When I reminiscence about the days when the St. Louis Cardinals held their spring training camps in St. Petersburg, Florida, I am reminded that I am getting older. Some readers/listeners have no understanding or recollection of what I am talking about. The club first moved to the Gulf community in 1938 and left after the 1997 season. One thing I remember with special fondness is...

Cardinals reduce 40-man roster to 39

The St. Louis Cardinals have placed pitcher Chris Carpenter onto the 60-day disabled list, giving them roster flexibility this spring.

St. Louis Cardinals Spring Training Games Mean Little But Should Be Fun

The day pitchers and catchers report is always a special day in the baseball community. It marks the symbolic end to the offseason, but another special day approaches this weekend to mark another step toward the birth of another baseball season. The St. Louis Cardinals will open their exhibition schedule at 12:05 p.m. Saturday against the Miami Marlins at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter...

Kyle Lohse rumors: Pirates, Braves not interested in free agent

It remains unclear where free agent Kyle Lohse will ultimately land this offseason, as the Pittsburgh Pirates and Atlanta Braves are the latest teams that are reportedly uninterested in the right-hander. While he believes Lohse would be a “great fit” for the Pirates, Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports says the Bucs don’t appear to be pursuing the veteran. Pittsburgh...

No Lohse in the Bronx

I guess New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman hasn’t said this enough, Kyle Lohse will not be pitching for the Bombers in 2013. With Phil Hughes recent shoulder injury though he was asked the question and forced to answer it once again. This is why the Yankees are fishing around for a veteran to put at Triple-A (they plan to watch Chien-Ming Wang in the World Baseball...
