Photo by Michael BaronThe Mets are in the market for a catcher, Alderson was recently quoted that Josh Thole would more then likely return and this week Mike Nickeas signed a minor league deal. More then likely Thole will be the back-up or platoon partner with a catcher they either sign or trade for, while Nickeas is in Las Vegas. I'd prefer they re-sign Shoppach and bring in someone else, maybe I'm being too hard on Thole but I just don't think he's a major league caliber player.The Red Sox signed David Ross to a two year deal, Ross was the best back-up catcher on the market and a Thole/Ross platoon would have made sense taking into consideration the teams budget. But there maybe there's a silver lining to the Ross signing, Joel Sherman speculates that the Sox might be open to moving Jarrod Saltalamacchia now that they signed Ross.  The two sides haven't talked but if Salty's available he does meet the Mets power needs hitting 25 homeruns last year.The 27 y/o switch hitting catcher has a propensity for striking out, as pointed out by DJ Short (Hardballtalk) he struck out 30.9 % since 2011 only Adam Dunn has done so more often.  In addition to his power Salty possesses another attribute the Mets value, his ability to handle a staff.  Just last season during his best offensive year as a major leaguer, he was being praised more for his catching.Jarrod Saltalmacchia has been hitting at a scorching pace for the Red Sox recently, but it appears to be his work behind the dish that is having the biggest impact. Salty is hitting .273 with seven home runs and 19 RBIs on the year, but he's also utilizing his cherished time with veteran Jason Varitek over the past two seasons to improve his work in his defensive duties.  Source NESN
