Rosenthal says they’re getting close to an agreement on a multi-year deal.
Cubs nearing deal with LHP Grabow — 1:00 a.m.
The Cubs are making progress on a deal with left-handed reliever John Grabow, one source said tonight.
The deal could be for two years, the source said.
Grabow, a free agent, came to the Cubs in a midseason trade with the Pirates.
I don’t mind signing Grabow, but it seems odd to sign a reliever this offseason. When you don’t have much money to spend, it makes little to no sense to make signing a reliever a priority. The Cubs have about $10 million to spend this offseason. It appears they’ll spend $2-4 million of that in 2010 on a reliever. Then they’ll not offer Rich Harden arbitration. This is a strange offseason plan. I just don’t get it.
