The Cubs’ plan since day one of Spring Training was to have outfield prospect Javier Baez start the year in the minor leagues, either in High-A ball or at Double-A.
Sunday the Cubs stayed true to their plan by demoting the 20-year old to their minor league camp, but not before he opened some eyes and dropped some jaws during his limited time.
Baez ended his stint in big-league camp by hitting four home runs in his last two games, including three straight on consecutive pitches. Two of the home runs came Friday in an exhibition game against Japan’s World Baseball Classic team.
He’s made a believer out of Alfonso Soriano. “It’s unbelievable. Two homers yesterday, two more today – and bombs. I’m very impressed,” the Cubs veteran outfielder told MLB.com. “He’s got a lot of power. Very good defense, too. I’m very impressed, because he’s only 20 years old. I am sorry to report the following news, but the Chicago Cubs have decided to cut super star prospects Javier Baez and Jorge Soler. Now, before you start having a panic attack, they did not release them from their contracts. They simply decided to reassign them to the minor league camps, a move which will be made official tomorrow.
