The Cubs caught a glimpse of Pedro Strop in the closer role Saturday as he struck out the side in the ninth inning to preserve a 3-1 victory over the Braves at Wrigley Field. A day after veteran closer Kevin Gregg complained about his initial perception of Cubs management's lack of respect for him Strop complimented Gregg for helping him develop. "We have been teammates before" Strop said. "When I first got to the Orioles he was one of the only guys … he helped me a lot. Like how to set a routine and how to pitch around certain guys. He has been helping me a lot (here) just like he used to." Before Saturday's game the Cubs announced President Theo Epstein had decided not to release Gregg because of after Gregg's criticism Friday. Gregg had apologized to Epstein and manager Dale Sveum. Saturday the Cubs were pleased not to see the Braves celebrate their National League East title on their field as the Braves still need a victory or a Nationals loss. Travis Wood pitched seven strong innings allowing one run on five hits with four walks and seven strikeouts. Reliever Carlos Villanueva (7-8) was credited with the victory after pitching a scoreless eighth. Strop obtained from the Orioles in a four-player trade on July 2 earned his first save with the Cubs. He fanned Gerald Laird Dan Uggla and B.J. Upton to end the game. "That was pitch-efficient strikes quick-pitch strikes the whole gamut working" Sveum said. "That was nice to see especially at home in a nice ballgame when we came back." The Braves took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning after Freddie Freeman walked and Chris Johnson singled. Evan Gattis singled up the middle to score Freeman.
