Found October 24, 2012 on Cub Reporter:
Today the Cubs claimed former Twins first round pick (27th pick in 2008 draft) Carlos Gutierrez off waivers after he was outrighted. The 6-3" righty will be 26 next year and was in the midst of his third year at Triple A Rochester. Then his shoulder gave out, which led to arthriscopic surgery for a cleanup by Dr. Yocum in June. Claims are he will be ready for spring training and I'm sure our own Dr. Hecht can elaborate on the surgery details. Aaron Gleeman had him as the Twins #25 prospect heading into the season. From the moment they took him 27th overall in the 2008 draft the Twins have talked up Carlos Gutierrez as a future late-inning reliever, touting his "power sinker" and closing experience at the University of Miami. Unfortunately there hasn't been much about his actual performance to match those high hopes, as his impressive ground-ball rate comes attached to terrible control... He did boost a nifty 60% groundball rate though. As for the 40-mam carous...

Alfonso Soriano: Creating A Trade Rumor

The Cubs are tired of Alfonso Soriano and have been looking to move him for more than a year. He has an incredibly high contract based completely on his high level of production year after year. The Cubs know they have no chance to compete during the rest of the length of Soriano's contract (through 2014) and would love to save a little money by dropping some or all of the last...

Cubs Fill Out Coaching Staff

The Cubs made it official and removed the interim tag from hitting coach James Rowson, who took over for one of last remaining Hendry scapegoats, Rudy Jamarillo. A bit surprising to me that they didn't end up hiring Dave Magadan, the Red Sox hitting coach during some of the Theo years, but Magadan must have decided that watching Texas Rangers baseball over the Cubs was a more...

Recker Claimed by Mets, Four Others Outrighted to Iowa

Catcher Anthony Recker (Designated for Assignment yesterday to make room the 40-man roster for RHP Carlos Gutierrez) was claimed off waivers today by the New York Mets, and RHP Jason Berken (claimed off waivers from Baltimore in September), 2B Adrian Cardenas (claimed off waiver from Oakland last February), RHP Marcos Mateo (who was on the 60-day DL after undergoing TJS in June)...

Cubs claim Gutierrez off waivers, designate Recker

The Chicago Cubs have claimed right-handed pitcher Carlos Gutierrez off waivers from the Minnesota Twins and designated catcher Anthony Recker for assignment. Gutierrez has gone 15-20 with a 4.11 ERA in 136 appearances (32 starts) over five seasons in the Twins' minor league system. He was 2-2 with a 5.06 ERA in 10 relief appearances last season with Triple-A Rochester before...

Cubs, assistant GM Bush agree to 3-year extension

The Chicago Cubs have agreed to a three-year contract extension with assistant general manager Randy Bush. The deal announced Tuesday runs through 2015. Bush is entering his seventh season as assistant GM and ninth in the organization. He joined the club as a special assistant to the general manager before the 2005 season. The Cubs also announced Tuesday they have hired former...

Cubs hire Bell as third base coach

The Chicago Cubs have hired former major leaguer David Bell as their third base coach and removed the interim tag from hitting coach James Rowson. The moves announced Tuesday complete manager Dale Sveum's staff. Bell, the son of former major leaguer Buddy Bell and grandson of Gus Bell, spent the past four seasons managing and coaching third base in the Cincinnati Reds'...

Cubs make staff moves

The Chicago Cubs lifted the interim tag from hitting coach James Rowson and named David Bell as their third-base coach on Tuesday. The Cubs also announced that assistant general manager Randy Bush received a three-year contract extension. Rowson had replaced Rudy Jaramillo, who was fired in June, after serving as a minor-league hitting instructor. Bell, who replaces Pat Listach...

Wholesale Change #1 – Mets Claim Catcher Anthony Recker Off Waivers From Cubs

We’re going to track all the wholesale changes for you as they go down this off-season, and on that note I have the great pleasure of announcing that the Mets have claimed catcher Anthony Recker off waivers from the Chicago Cubs. Recker, 29, played for both the Cubs and the Oakland A’s (so he must be good) last season and was even on their Opening Day roster. However, the right...

David Bell moves to Chicago; Donald Lutz is AFL Player of the Week

Bell will be trading his Bats jersey in for a Cubs one. It was only a one-year relationship between the Louisville Bats and David Bell as the 2012 manager has joined the coaching staff of the Chicago Cubs as third-base coach. He led the Bats to an awful 51-93 record during the 2012 season, in which the Bats seemed to be severely lacking in talent, in part due to offseason trading...

Shoulder Scope

Findings on Carlos Gutierrez's shoulder arthroscopic surgery by Dr Yokum. Looks like a loose body to me. Missing a "key" component? No wonder he got moved.
