“Could the Cubs send Ryan Dempster 8.1 miles south to the White Sox?” That was the question posed by WSCR’s David Schuster during the Sox pregame show today. “Dempster has pitched well but has nothing to show for it,” Schuster further explained minutes before the White Sox took on the Cleveland Indians at U.S. Cellular Field. As he explained, Dempster should be another piece sold off soon by the Cubs, who will clearly be sellers (they currently are tied for the worst record in baseball with the Minnesota Twins at 15-30) this MLB trade deadline. Dempster is an attractive player to a contending and buying team such as the White Sox, as they would be only 1.5 games behind the first place Indians should they win today. Dempster himself knows he’s trade bait, as this quote from a Chicago Sun-Times blog posted earlier today attests: “I’m not an idiot. I know how things go,’’ said Dempster, a two-time All-Star and the Cubs’ Opening Day starter the last two seasons. “I know how it goes with

The Chicago Cubs are nearing the Abyss

I really don’t know what to say. I am at a loss for words. What is there to say? There is not an answer. And if you think Anthony Rizzo is one, put down the drink right now. I saw the movie “The Abyss” when I was young. I really don’t remember anything other than it was under water and I was scared. And watching the Cubs … well, I feel the same thing. I might not see the...

Rafael Dolis Loses Cubs Closer Job

The closer carousel continues to spin in Chicago as Rafael Dolis has been removed as the starting closer for the Cubs. Manager Dale Sveum removed the volatile Dolis after he allowed at least one run in five of his past six innings of work. With an ERA approaching five and a save conversion percentage of just 67%, it makes sense for Sveum to try a new option at closer until Carlos...

Camp, Russell could be next in line for save chances -- if Cubs get a lead

The Chicago Cubs' revolving door at closer took another spin Sunday. Out went right-hander Rafael Dolis. In went, well, whomever manager Dale Sveum feels right for the situation. In other words, it appears to boil down to either right-hander Shawn Camp or left-hander James Russell to close out games. With a 12-game losing streak after Sunday's 10-4 loss at Pittsburgh...

5th worst start for the Cubs ever

Chris Jaffe looked at the Cubs worst starts and found that this 15-31 bunch ties for 5th worst with the 1962 team. Jaffe's article is worth a read. It's a brief article so it won't take you very long. Last night I became curious how well the Cubs would have to play the rest of [...]

Sveum juggles batting order as Cubs drop 10th straight

The speculation centered on the Cubs making a lineup change involving shortstop Starlin Castro. Manager Dale Sveum made that change Friday night, but it was not the one that was the center of the speculation. In the 1-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates -- the Cubs' 10th straight defeat -- Castro moved up in the batting order from the No. 3 spot to second. There had been talk...

Cubs Closer Ex-Be Al A Dolis

When Sveum told Rafael Dolis that they need him to fill in for Carlos Marmol, he took them way too literally.  “So you don’t want me to walk everyone while blowing games?  Totally mi mal!”  That was Rafael Dolis talking through his translator who speaks Spanglish.  “Can we get a translator who speaks English and Spanish…Separately!”  That’s Sveum losing his shizz...

NL Central Quarter Report Card

Chicago CubsHitters: C-. OK, I can't completely pan the Cubs offense, despite them having the third fewest runs in the NL. Bryan LaHair has been AWESOME at first base, hitting ten homers and OPSing 1.020 in his first extended stint in the major leagues. There is a little bit to be afraid about with him, notably the 30% strikeout rate and .405 BABIP. Starlin Castro is doing his...

Roy Oswalt, Ryan Dempster Remain Options to Bolster Red Sox Rotation

BOSTON –– It took a private meeting from David Ortiz to get everyone's attention in the clubhouse. Since then, the Red Sox have won 10 of 13 games and are in position to claim a winning record with a victory over the Rays. Through it all, the team has received contributions from unlikely heroes, like Andrew Miller and Daniel Nava. Before the upcoming seven-game home stand...

Anthony Rizzo Rumors: Cubs AAA affiliate pulls cheap publicity stunt?

The Chicago Cubs AAA affiliate, the Iowa Cubs, made a huge PR department blunder tonight; their media relations employees appear either a.) incompetent or b.) manipulative. When the organization itself (the insider of all insiders) gets the news wrong, as they did regarding top prospect Anthony Rizzo, it’s either gross negligence or a desperate play for publicity. You tell me...

Pirates 1, Cubs 0

A.J. Burnett and four relievers worked out of trouble all game and the Pittsburgh Pirates sent the Chicago Cubs to their 10th straight loss with a 1-0 victory on Friday night. Burnett (3-2) gave up six hits, struck out six and walked two over 5 1-3 innings and the National League's best bullpen made it stand up as the Pirates extended Chicago starter Ryan Dempster's misery...

Bucs break out bats, crush Cubs

Everything came together for the Pirates on Sunday afternoon, and they smoked the Cubs en route to their first home sweep in well over a year. The big story today was the offense, which was fueled by the long ball. After Jose Tabata led off with a single and Matt Garza threw away Josh Harrison‘s bunt, Andrew McCutchen grounded to third and Tabata was thrown out at home. That...

Cubs Post-Game Recap by Spinal Tap (This Goes to 11)

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Chicago Cubs – Game 47

First things first I guess I should plug last night’s podcast.  Let me just say it was a pretty epic disaster, but it will get better.   Now that might be pretty embarrassing, but is there anything more embarrassing then how the Cubs lost last night?  They walked Josh Harrison who was trying to bunt AND [...]

Metaphorically Speaking, What 2012 Represents: Rebuilding vs Deconstruction

From the previous thread, I came upon Old and Blue's complaint that he hates the phrase, "rebuilding year". It implies that there is some actual construction going on. So far, best as I can tell, the only brick laid down is a Rizzo block, and there are no guarantees with prospects. Shark has been a pleasant surprise, but no credit for TheoCorp there. He's...
