The Chicago Cubs are 18 games under .500.  At 38-56, they haven’t had a ton of fun on the field, but they haven’t let mediocre play inhibit them from having fun off of it.  On Sunday afternoon, they took a page out of the book of Joe Maddon, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays manager.  To build team comradery, Maddon has his guys dress up in themes on round trips.

Cubs players and manager Dale Sveum dressed up as “superheroes” after their game against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.  The plan was to wear the costumes on the flight and to not take them off until they arrived in Pittsburgh for their series against the Pirates.

With the hole they have dug, they’ll need the whole cast below to claw back into wild card contention.  And even with Super Mario playing third, it still isn’t going to happen.

Outfielder Reed Johnson (left) as Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer, and utilityman Jeff Baker as Cubs President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein:

Reliever Scott Maine as Waluigi, catcher Steve Clevenger as Wario, and first baseman Bryan LaHair as Super Mario:

Outfielder David DeJesus as He-Man:

Catcher Geovany Soto as a Ghostbuster:

Closer Carlos Marmol as Zorro:

Outfielder Tony Campana as Flash :

Manager Dale Sveum as Hellboy:

So, who sported the best costume Sunday?
