Cubs hoping to reverse the curse........again

To think that the Cubs can make it to the playoffs this season is not a stretch. A weak division and a cluster atop the NL wild card standings all give Cub fans reason for hope and optimism. Their lack of movement during the trading deadline bothered some fans, but some (speaking only for myself) realize that making "sexy" moves just to appease fans is not always the wisest decisions (Ask the Astros and their 3 month rental of Randy Johnson in 98). But to think that the Cubs can do the impossible and win the Fall Classic might be a stretch and here are a few reasons why: (You will not see a lame billy goat reference in this list either. There is no curse of the goat, get over it and quit talking about it)
1) Starting pitching. They have been overachieving all season and at some point Marquis will quit getting the run support he gets and one of the two young lefties will hit a bump in the road. The combination of Zambrano and Lilly has been the best duo in the National League this season, but how long can Zambrano fight off the emotional demons that lurk in his head during a game.
2) Too many young kids. I love the youth movement the Cubs are taking and Fontenot and Theriot should be a great double play combination for years to come, but their youth is scary. You add in Felix PIe, Angel Pagan, Marshall, Hill and that is 6 very important pieces to your puzzle that are inexperienced and might not be ready for the pressure cooker that is Wrigley field in September during a playoff run. But wouldn't it be awesome to hear Haray Caray call the 6-4-3 with those two Cajuns in the middle?
3) Injuries. Soriano is out for a month and Ramirez is banged up again. From what I have read his wrist has no structural damage, but he doesn't plan on playing the rest of this weekend (at Colorado) and might not play until the latter part of next week. Whose to say he will be 100% or durable when he returns? Add one more injury on top of those two and it might spell disaster for the Cubbies.
These might be reasons a life-long Cubs fan have found just to avoid dissapointment when they collapse, but hopefully they will avoid all of the things mentioned above and make a memorable playoff run. As long as the Brewers continue to struggle and Larussa keeps batting his pitcher 8th good things could still come for Lou's boys in blue.

Yeah, the division is pretty weak this year. I think Lilly is for real. Marquis is slowly fading. Big is solid and will beat the "demons in his head". I think they will make the playoffs. I'm one of the angry fans who are mad for not getting a reliever. Their relievers SUCK(with the excepton of Carlos Marmol. That guy is a true beast. He's gonna be a star.). I've never seen a bullpen so bad. Earlier in the season they were like 1-11 in one run games and most of them were because the relievers blow it. It amazes me how Bob Howry, Scott Eyre, Will Ohman, and Michael Wuertz have jobs in the majors, and not to mention the relievers that come up from the minors, then blow a game and go back to the minors. Sweet Lou is gonna hve a heart attack if these guys stay with the Cubs. They could've got Gagne or Dotel but did nothing. That non-move is going to cost them big time even if Wood returns to the Wood of old.

I agree 100% about the bullpen. Obviously the Cubs and Hendry were counting the return of Wood as a trading deadline addition, but how can you put any stock in Wood at this point in his career. I heard some rumblings about Jermaine Dye wearing the Cubs uniform maybe....we need another outfielder about as much as Bonds needs some more haters. I really think the Cubs are stuck with the ownership issues this season.

Hey! I just saw they got Scott Posednik off waivers. He's no star, but I'm sure he can find a way to contribute with Soriano gone for a month.

That is a nice piece to the puzzle. I guess that is the Sox outfielder that I was hearing about.....he will be a nice fit, but something has to be done with the platoon of outfielders we have. Jones, Floyd, Murton, Pagan.........it seems ludacrious

I hate to sound cliche Gents, but we will see what happens when September rolls around. I hope i'm wrong. STAY TUNED....

All true Cubs fans are always waiting on something bad to happen. I am always expecting the wheels to fall off and the sky to fall....but it doesn't hurt to hope.

Very optimistic. I can feel that. I'm the same way about Atlanta.
