Getting production from the middle of the order has been a problem all year for the Chicago Cubs.

Now, it may be reaching a crisis state. In Saturday's 10-5 loss to Arizona, the Cubs wasted 4-for-5

nights by both leadoff hitter David DeJesus and No. 2 hitter Starlin Castro.

Things got no better Sunday in a 5-1 loss to the Diamondbacks, as the Cubs got swept in the three-game

series and have lost four in a row overall.

"Our core guys have got to start doing something in the middle of the order," manager Dale Sveum said.

But help may be on the way.

The Cubs have conceded that the time is nearing to call up first-base phenom Anthony Rizzo from Class

AAA (Des Moines) Iowa. It's possible that time could come this week, when the Cubs return home Monday to

open a homestand against the Mets and Astros.

"We've talked about it," Sveum said. "But it always would be nice to have somebody hitting behind him,

too. Whenever you have somebody with that much hype and that much ability, it always helps to at least have

somebody hitting behind him."

The Cubs have had trouble hitting with men in scoring position. The trick for Sveum, when Rizzo does

come up, will be how to arrange the middle of his batting order. Rizzo and first baseman-outfielder Bryan

LaHair bat left-handed, and left fielder Alfonso Soriano hits right-handed.
