Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Ryan Dempster has exercised his $14-million contract option for the 2012 season.The 34-year-old righthander went 10-14 for the season with a 4.80 ERA and 191 strikeouts over 202 1/3 innings.He's expected to be a key piece of Chicago's rotation as the team undergoes a major front-office reshaping with the hiring of Theo Epstein as president of player development.Dempster has spent the previous eight seasons in Chicago, beginning as the team's closer before being shifted to the starting rotation.This past season represented his first with a losing record since being made a starter four years ago.
