The Chicago Cubs on Monday made a handful of roster moves, placing infielder Jeff Baker on the 15-day disabled list and designating righthander Jeff Stevens for assignment. Baker suffered a strained left groin last week and tried to play through the injury. He is batting .368 with a homer and 14 RBI in 87 at-bats this season. Stevens had a 5.14 ERA in seven innings before he was optioned to the minor leagues on April 23. He is likely to clear waivers. To replace Baker, the Cubs purchased the contract of infielder D.J. LeMahieu from Triple-A Iowa, where he was hitting .358 with two homers and 27 RBI. The Cubs also announced righthander Matt Garza, sidelined with tightness in his right elbow, threw on flat ground Monday. He is expected to try throwing off a mound Wednesday. Acquired in an offseason trade with Tampa Bay, Garza was 2-4 with a 3.72 ERA in nine starts before the injury.
