Journeymen of Tomorrow: Week 4 Prospect Watch

Each Saturday, I'm going to summarize the weekly performance top prospects at each level. Hopefully, this will give more of a snapshot of how our future Cubs are doing. AAA Brett Jackson 2: The Golden (Sombrero) Army is cooked. His peripherals are bad (8.5% BB, 32.2% K), he's hit-lucky (.375 BABIP), and he's still well under league-average at AAA. I'm pretty sure...

Almora & Vitters Lead Cubs to Victory over A's

Albert Almora laced an opposite-field RBI triple into the RF corner and then scored one out later on a sacrifice fly, Josh Vitters roped an RBI double, and Jose Rosario threw four innings of one-hit ball, helping the Cubs edge the Athletics 4-3 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training action this morning at Fitch Park Field #4 (formerly known as "Field #3") in Mesa...

JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 4-28-13

Iowa Cubs 10 @ Omaha Storm Chasers 6 In 6 innings today, Brooks Raley struck a batter out, walked 3 and gave up 2 home runs. He only gave up 4 runs, which is kind of impressive when you look at what I wrote first. It’s not at all impressive though. Hisanori Takahashi struck a batter out in one inning and Zach Putnam gave up a hit and had 1 strikeout in 1 inning. Rafael Dolis gave...

No setbacks for Cubs' Matt Garza, July trade still possible

The Chicago Cubs are still building their identity, but they feel confident in the direction they are going.  What the team will have to focus on is building young stable players going forward and trading ones they can't/shouldn't keep when the right opportunity presents.  That opportunity could be this July if Matt Garza can return healthy.  And the word is, he is doing...

Cubs’ Josh Vitters Returns from DL to Triple A

Chicago Cubs third base prospect Josh Vitters has been activated from the disabled list rejoined the Triple A Iowa Cubs in time for the April 30 game, but he did not play. Vitters had suffered from a locked up lower back that occurred on his way from Spring Training to Iowa’s opening series in Albuquerque, New Mexico. MLB.com’s Carrie Muskat tweeted the news to her followers...

Former Cubs 1B Mark Grace behaving quite well in prison

Former Chicago Cubs and Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Mark Grace is finishing out a 4 month sentence at Tent City Prison in Arizona. Mark Grace, most recently a D-Backs television color analyst Mark Grace was sent to jail on DUI charges. The “lovable” drunk that used to hang out a lot at Durkin’s on the North side of Chicago trolling for Lincoln Park Trixie booty is supposedly...

Cubs 5, Padres 3

Darwin Barney and Cody Ransom each drove in two runs and the Chicago Cubs defeated the San Diego Padres 5-3 on Monday. Barney hit a pair of RBI doubles as he went 2-for-3 and Ransom went 2-for-4 with a home run. Both players also made nice defensive plays in the seventh with men in scoring position to preserve the Cubs' lead. Kevin Gregg got the final out of the eighth with...

RE24 Update

If you couldn't tell, I'm back at work for the first time since Leah was born… so I have more spare time. Earlier in the season, I discovered that the Cubs barely had anyone on the Top 50 list for RE24 this season. That trend has continued. The only member on the list this year so far is David DeJesus. 47th David DeJesus, 5.91 65th Anthony Rizzo, 3.38 79th Nate Schierholtz...

Cubs 3, Marlins 2

David DeJesus hit a tiebreaking single in the seventh inning to help lift the Chicago Cubs to a 3-2 win over the struggling Miami Marlins on Saturday night. Travis Wood (2-1) pitched six innings allowing two runs and struck out five for Chicago, which has won four of five. Three relievers held the lead to get to Kevin Gregg, who pitched a perfect ninth for his third save. Marlins...

Ex-Cubs pitcher Randy Wells retires

Former Chicago Cubs pitcher Randy Wells has retired after going winless in five starts this season for the Texas Rangers' Triple-A team. The Rangers said Tuesday that Wells' retirement was effectively immediately. In 98 career games in the majors from 2008-12, all but one with the Cubs, Wells was 28-32 with a 4.08 ERA. He was 1-2 in 12 games last season for Chicago, but...

Series Preview: Chicago Cubs (9-15) vs San Diego Padres (9-15)

It was nice to see the Cubs beating up on another team for once this year. They get to face another team that may be worse than they are in the Padres. The Padres have had a weird season so far. They opened the year with a series loss of the Mets, and have been swept by the Giants and the Rockies (twice!). However, they are currently coming off a sweep of the world champions, and...

The Art of Second Guessing

Today’s game featuring the Chicago Cubs and the Miami Marlins has a lot of people talking and questioning Manager Dale Sveum’s managerial decisions. Quite understandable considering how things unraveled at the end of the game, but there are always things to consider when trying to figure out who to blame, and how much blame each person deserves. Whenever anything bad takes place...

Padres-Cubs Preview

The Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres may be at the bottom of their respective divisions, but recent success has both teams feeling better. Some offensive help would certainly please Jeff Samardzija. He'll try to avoid the longest losing streak of his career Monday night and help the Cubs to a sixth win in seven home meetings with the Padres, winners of four straight. Chicago...

Ivy’s Cubs recap (@Reds & Marlins)

The Cubs finished this road trip with a 4-6 record. After being swept out of Milwaukee they traveled to Cincinnati and then Miami. There are some things the Cubs need to keep working on but this road trip did show some positives.   4/22- @Reds L 4-5 4/23- @Reds W 4-2 4/24- @Reds L 0-1   Going into the Reds series, the Cubs starting pitchers had been the most consistent aspect of...
