As executives head for the winter meetings in Nashville, the Chicago Cubs have five pitchers in the rotation. That doesn't mean they are going to stop there. Before the meetings, the Cubs signed former Rangers right-hander Scott Feldman to a one-year deal worth $6 million with another $1 million possible in incentives. That gave the Cubs a rotation of right-handers Matt Garza, Jeff Samardzija, Scott Baker and Feldman, and left-hander Travis Wood. Two rookie left-handers, Brooks Raley and Chris Rusin, got starts at the end of the 2012 season. They're part of the inventory the Cubs will take to spring training, but they're both likely to open the 2013 season at Class AAA Iowa. There are certainly question marks with the current rotation, and that is why team president Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer have said they will seek to add even more pitching if they can. Garza is coming off an elbow injury that ended his season in July. Baker, recently signed a...

An early look at the 2013 rotation

Assuming health, the Cubs rotation appears to be set with Matt Garza, Jeff Samardzija, Travis Wood, Scott Baker and Scott Feldman. I was curious what we could reasonably expect from this group next year and decided to use the CAIRO projections to calculate percentile forecasts. Before that, there's been some recent talk about how this [...]

Cubs will discuss Soriano; Phils a possible suitor

Chicago Cubs outfielder Alfonso Soriano has been available on the trade market at various times over the past several years. This winter, he might finally be on the move. The Cubs expect to meet with teams regarding Soriano during the upcoming winter meetings in Nashville, according to major-league sources. It won’t necessarily be easy to deal Soriano, who has a full no-trade clause...

I Hate When This Happens

One of the most agonizing situations for me is when the Cubs have a Jewish ball player. And thanks to Scott Feldman it looks like I will be annoyed for at least one season. Feldman signed a $6 Million 1 year contract with up to another million in incentives. Feldman figures to fit into a rebuilding rotation. Looks like Theo hated having Passover Seder by himself. Cubs looking for pitching ahead of winter meetings

Despite recently signing two free agent pitchers, Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer is still seeking additional arms as he prepares for next week's winter meetings. ''We're constantly on the lookout for more depth,'' the Cubs' second-year GM said Friday. ''If you think you have enough pitching, you're always wrong.'' The Cubs have filled...

Back after a short break

I apologize for my lengthy absence from this blog. Once the postseason hit, and my boys were out of it, I lost a little bit of passion for the game. I didn’t watch much baseball in October although I kept up with scores and series records.  I still love baseball, but I needed a break.  After the rough ending to the Rangers’ season, I had to step away for a bit. It’s been...
