According to Jed Hoyer, the Cubs were never close to trading Jeff Samardzija. They were demanding a significant package in return as you would expect. No team was willing to match that so the Cubs just kept Samardzija and plan to work out an extension with him this off-season. If the Cubs are unable to reach a deal with Samardzija, they may trade him according to multiple outlets. However, Samardzija is open to a contract extension and is willing to talk after the season.  A couple weeks ago I looked at a possible extension and how much it would cost. If Samardzija was a free agent after the season, which he is not, he could look for something like a 6-year, $94 million contract, or 7-year and $100 million.  Once you factor in his two additional arbitration years, it falls considerably. Something like this: Year Est. Salary Contract Value 2014 $6.00   2015 $9.00   2016 $17.48   2017 $15.37 $47.85 2018 $12.85 $60.71 2019 $9.87 $70.58 2020 $6.37 $76.94 I'd look an extension in the 5 to 7 year range for betwen $60 and $80 million.  If the Cubs instead decide to trade Samardzija, there is about $23 million in surplus trade value ($38 million in value in 2014 and 2015 and will be paid approximately $15 million).  The Cubs were very active in July, but it led to a July 31st that was as boring as I can remember. I didn't expect the Cubs would complete any deals that day. They've got to field a team the rest of the way and any return for players like David DeJesus would have been minimal.  Speaking of DeJesus, the Cubs will almost certainly exercise their team option for $6 million on him next year. Will they look outside the system for additional outfield help or be happy to go with Nate Schierholtz and maybe Junior Lake beside him? There's been a lot of talk around here of Shin-Soo Choo and Jacoby Ellsbury.  Whether or not the Cubs go after one of them, or another free agent of that caliber will depend on whether or not they have a protected first round pick in next year's draft.  The post Cubs to work on extension with Jeff Samardzija this offseason appeared first on Obstructed View.

Cubs fan fails at celebrating win with sign

Cubs fan celebrating a Cubs win with an upside-down “W” sign. Seriously, how long does it take to see if you’re holding your sign up properly, like two seconds? Then again, when you’re rooting for the Cubbies, chances are you haven’t had much practice holding up a “W” sign, which would explain why this poor guy failed miserably. JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 8-1-13

Iowa Cubs 3 @ Salt Lake Bees 9 Mike Olt was 1-4 with a strikeout. Logan Watkins was 1-5. As I said, only 2 people actually play offense on this team. I think starting next Friday, I'm going to take a vacation from Iowa box scores and just write about anything more interesting (which, coincidentally, is anything). Barret Loux was doing pretty well until the 6th, when the wheels...

In parts of seven big league season Murphy has played in 244 games...

Iowa Cubs 4 @ Salt Lake Bees 5 Ty Wright went 2-2 with 2 homers. Mike Olt has a .249 OPS and has an ISO of 0 over his last ten. Edwin Mayonnaise had a double. Nobody else is remotely worth mentioning. Tennessee Smokies 0 @ Jacksonville Suns 1 Matt Szczur was 2-4. Chicago Cubs name Minor League POM: BIG BOY Dan Vogelbach

The Chicago Cubs today named Single-A Kane County Cougars first baseman Dan Vogelbach and Double-A Tennessee Smokies pitcher Matt Loosen the organization’s minor league player and pitcher of the month for July. The walk-up music for Dan Vogelbach says it all. Whenever the Kane County Cougars first baseman comes up to bat, the Stadium audio blares the “BIG BOY” snippet from...

Cubs place Luis Valbuena on DL with oblique strain

Chicago Cubs third baseman Luis Valbuena sat out Saturday's game with the Los Angeles Dodgers due to a right oblique strain. After the game, as's Manny Randhawa reports, the Cubs announced that they will place Valbuena on the 15-day disabled list. The move should become official before Sunday's game, so the Cubs have a chance to make a roster move to fill...

2014 Cubs: A Bat Away From Normal

Any baseball fan likely realizes that the game is fundamentally different in 2013 than it was in, say, 1999 (the height of the "We Care About Steroids" era). In 1999, the league wOBA was .341; in 2013, it's .313. That's a titanic difference. Walks are at a 20-year low, and strikeouts this year are only lower than last year (and 19.7% of all PA). This seems to be...

JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 7-31-13

Iowa Cubs 3 @ Salt Lake Bees 6 Mike Olt went 0-4. Jae-Hoon Ha went 2-3 with a walk. No one else played so don't even look. I seriously considered linking that score to a rick roll. Justin Grimm had a pretty forgettable 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 5 SO start. Casey Coleman was dicey in his scoreless frame, but then Marcus Hatley allowed 4 runs in 0.2 innings. Ick. Marcos Mateo, newly...

CM Punk Invades Wrigley Field

For some reason, the Chicago Cubs did a Lucha Libre wrestling mask giveaway Tuesday night when they took on the Milwaukee Brewers.  So, naturally, WWE Superstar (and noted Cubs fan) CM Punk was on hand to cheer on los Cachorros. Oh, they also let him sing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame". Unfortunately, the beer makers put the smack down (see what I did there?) on...

Dodgers top Cubs, win 11th straight road game

CHICAGO (AP) -- Yasiel Puig hit a long home run and scored two runs to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 6-4 win over the Chicago Cubs on Thursday. Hanley Ramirez and Jerry Hairston each drove in two runs for the Dodgers, who got a win a night after having a four-game winning streak snapped and improved their record to 11-2 since the All-Star break. Junior Lake and Anthony Rizzo...

Timid GMs made deadline a dud-line

Why is Michael Morse still a Mariner? Why is Nate Schierholtz not a Pirate? Why are seemingly half of MLB's general managers infected with paralysis by analysis, unwilling to help their teams even incrementally?
