Another Cubs Blog:
As I was watching parts of the ALCS tonight I realized how easy it would be for the Cubs to not just be favorites in the NL, but huge favorites. Really, it’s very simple. The team could easily do it if they wanted to and there’s really no reason not to. Here’s how:
Re-sign Rich Harden
Sign Matt Holliday
Sign Placido Polanco, Chone Figgins or Orlando Hudson
Sign one of Rafael Betancourt, Rafael Soriano or Mike Gonzalez
That’s it.
Some of you are saying that’s too much money for the Cubs to spend. Not really. Backload these contracts and if needed, have a fire sale when the 2010 season ends. The Marlins have done it twice. If the Marlins can overextend themselves for one season, there’s no reason whatsoever the Chicago Cubs cannot do it.
Signing all of these guys obviously doesn’t guarantee a trip to the World Series, but it makes them far superior to any other NL team. This is kind of what the Yankees did last offseason and while they still may not reach the World Series, they are the best team in baseball and it’s not really that close. This team is in a perfect spot right now to go all out and do whatever you can to get to the World Series and win it. This is how you do it. If it doesn’t work or if the Cubs need to trim payroll, you can do that next offseason. There’s quite a bit of money coming off the books after 2010 and 2011 and some of the currently signed players will become attractive trade candidates. Maybe you make enough money to keep all of these guys. Maybe not.
Getting to the World Series hasn’t been easier for this team in a very long time. You can sign these guys and trade away contract later if you have to, but there’s no reason not to go all out and try to win it all. That’s especially true when all you have to do is sign 3 free agents and only 1 of them would be getting a huge contract (Holliday).
I know the Cubs won’t do this. They’re too stupid to figure this out.
