The Pirates Andrew McCutchen defeated the Tigers on Saturday by a score of 4 to 3.

McCutchen homered twice–both two run shots off Drew Smyly–to give the Bucs just enough to hold off the Tigers. Josh Harrison, hitting in front of Cutch in the two hole, had another productive game was on base for both. McCutchen continued his torrid week — he’s now up to seven homers and has had homered four times in three games. It’s incredibly puzzling to see pitchers–particularly lefties–pitch to him amongst eight other hitters that don’t come anywhere close to him.

A.J. Burnett wasn’t at his best, but managed to grind out a quality start despite only two strikeouts. He surrendered a 2-run shot to Prince Fielder, but was able to avoid any other damage even though the Tigers kept getting baserunners with two outs.

Jason Grilli allowed a run in the seventh (thanks to a Rod Barajas passed ball), but Juan Cruz and Joel Hanrahan shut the door in the 8th and 9th. Hanrahan walked Miguel Cabrera to give Fielder a chance to win the game with two outs, but he struck him out to end it.

Big win for the Pirates – they needed at least one in Detroit. McCutchen is good at baseball.
