PHOENIX -- Left fielder Jason Kubel, who belted 30 home runs for the Diamondbacks last season after signing as a free agent, was designated for assignment Tuesday to make room for left-handed pitcher David Holmberg. Kubel, 31, struggled with injuries for much of the season, starting with a sore knee during spring training, then a quad injury in April, and another knee problem soon thereafter. He never showed the power stroke of a year ago and found himself crowded out of playing time in the outfield, even with injuries to Cody Ross and Adam Eaton. He was hitting .220 with eight doubles, five home runs and 32 RBI in 89 games. He hit .253 ith 30 home runs and 90 RBI a year ago. Since the start of July, he's had just 11 hits in 79 at-bats (.139) with one home run and seven RBI. Three of his five home runs came in April. The designation means the team can trade him, release him outright or, with his agreement, send him to the minor leagues. Holmberg was recalled to start Tuesday night's game on an emergency basis. The scheduled starter, Trevor Cahill, was forced into action in Saturday night's 18-inning victory over Philadelphia. He had a 5-7 record and 2.66 ERA in 152.1 innings for Double-A Mobile after entering the season ranked by Baseball America as the D-backs' No. 6 prospect.
