While several other teams have jockeyed with the closer position this season, the Diamondbacks plan to stick with J.J. Putz despite early-season inconsistencies. "Oh, yeah; no question," D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said. "I just think he's the guy. He's our closer and nothing's changed. It's as simple as that." Putz brings a strong leadership presence to the bullpen and the clubhouse, and he was among the D-backs' most valuable pieces in 2011, when he was 2-2 with a 2.17 ERA and converted a career-high 44 saves in 48 opportunities while helping the D-backs to the NL West title. It has not been as much of a straight line this season. Putz has converted 9-of-12 save chances, but the failures have been dramatic. Colorado's Todd Helton and Washington's Ian Desmond hit two-out, two-run walk-off home runs in the ninth inning, and the Dodgers' Ivan De Jesus hit a two-out, two-run double in the ninth inning for an 8-7 victory ...

D-backs, Montero agree to 5-year extension

PHOENIX The Diamondbacks made a proactive move Friday in agreeing to a five-year, 60 million contract extension with catcher Miguel Montero. Montero would have been the prize catcher on the free agent market this winter, and big-market teams such as the Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston and the New York Mets are among those who could be in the market for a top-tier catcher. The D-backs...

Brewers, Diamondbacks in NLDS rematch

The last time the Arizona Diamondbacks and Milwaukee Brewers met, one game separated both teams from the NL championship series. Neither team is playing as if a postseason rematch is in the offing. In a matchup of the Game 1 and 5 starters from the NL division series, Arizona's Ian Kennedy tries to avoid losing a career-high fifth consecutive start while Yovani Gallardo looks...

D-backs bounce back in a big way

PHOENIX The Diamondbacks blew off blowing a five-run lead pretty easily. A day after a most discouraging defeat, the D-backs reacted with an 11-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday, preventing a series sweep with their highest scoring game of the season while taking some the sting off an 8-7 loss Tuesday. It was the kind of all-around game the D-backs have not had...

NL West Quarter Report Card

Arizona Diamondbacks Hitters: F. The D'Backs slugged their way to an division title last season, but that hasn't been the case this season. No Arizona player has more than 5 homers. Even Justin Upton has been affected by the team-wide power outage as he currently sits with a puny .373 slugging percentage. Injuries have certainly played a role in their struggles as Stephen...

D-backs' Kennedy: Same guy, different results

PHOENIX Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling spoiled it for Diamondbacks fans. Desert dwellers are used to 20-game winners. They expect them, and they expect them in multiples. The bar is set about as high as Camelback Mountain. You could look it up. Johnson and Schilling are the only two pitchers in the major leagues in the last 21 years to win at least 21 games in two successive...

As a junior, he was Pac10 and National Pitcher of the Year, going 13-2 with an ERA of 1.25, and a record 203 strikeouts (breaking Mark Prior‘s record of 202...
