PHOENIX Chris Young was placed on the disabled list with a right shoulder contusion about 45 minutes before the Diamondbacks game against Pittsburgh on Wednesday afternoon. The move was not unexpected after Young, one of the hottest hitters in the National League, ran shoulder-first into the left-center field fence while catching a fly ball in the fourth inning Tuesday night. Young underwent an MRI on Wednesday morning after X-rays Tuesday night showed no broken bones. Were hoping it is quicker rather than longer, D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said in his morning press conference. The D-backs were hoping the MRI revealed a sprain of the AC joint at the top of the shoulder, but no other medical information was immediately available. The move left the D-backs without two of their starting outfielders, as Justin Upton sat out a second day after having fluid removed from the tip of his left thumb. Upton has a bone bruise, and the D-backs still are not ruling out a stint on the disabled list for him. Hes not going to go on the DL today. Well give him a day or so and see if we see any improvement, Gibson said. Despite little production from Upton, the D-backs are second in the NL in home runs and third in runs, but the offense could take a hit with Youngs loss. He was second in the NL in home runs (five) and OPS (1.397), third in batting average (.410) and tied for third in RBIs (13) entering games of Wednesday. He has homered in all three parks he has played in and against all four D-backs opponents this season. Rookie A.J. Pollock made his first major league in center field after being purchased from Class AAA Reno earlier Wednesday. Pollock caught a 6:30 a.m. flight from Fresno, where Reno was playing, and was hitting seventh in the lineup. Pollock, a 2009 first-round draft pick, technically took Geoff Blums spot on the roster after Blum was placed on the disabled list with a strained left oblique muscle suffered during batting practice Tuesday. Infielder Cody Ransom was purchased from Reno to take Youngs roster spot. Ransom was trying to pass kidney stones when he arrived with Pollock in the morning.Follow Jack Magruder on Twitter

With Young out, D-backs plan to regroup

PHOENIX -Now that Chris Young has been placed on the disabled list, Plan B has become Plan A. Not that the Diamondbacks are sweating it. They will miss Young, whose numbers litter the NL leader board and whose defense is so voracious that it occasionally takes a bite out of him, too. But they have done without before. After shortstop Stephen Drew went down last July 20, the D...

Life is about to get tougher for the Arizona Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks were my pick to win the NL West before this season, and I'd say about 55% of people had the same general opinion as me. They're off to a 7-5 start right now, second in the division, but their season is going to get a lot more interesting in the next month or so. Yesterday, the Diamondbacks placed center fielder Chris Young on the DL with a slight...

D-backs' Young 'not missing' amid red-hot start

PHOENIX -- Chris Young did not go into the offseason trying to make himself a different player. He is who he is. The subtle changes the Diamondbacks center fielder made over the winter have made him a more comfortable hitter, and his early success stands as testament. But the mechanical changes explain only part of it, Young said after hitting his fifth home run of the season in...

DL possible for Upton due to thumb injury

PHOENIX Still bothered by a sore left thumb, Justin Upton was expected to get an MRI on Tuesday afternoon, and manager Kirk Gibson did not dismiss the possibility that Upton could be placed on the disabled list to allow the injury to completley heal. "At some point you have to think long-term. If he keeps beating on it, it's not going to get better. Then it's something...

Diamondbacks place Young, Blum on DL

The Arizona Diamondbacks placed outfielder Chris Young and infielder Geoff Blum on the 15-day disabled list before Wednesday's game against Pittsburgh and brought up outfielder A.J. Pollock and infielder Cody Ransom. Young, an NL All-Star in 2010, injured his right shoulder crashing into the padded wall in center for a catch in the fourth inning Tuesday. An MRI confirmed he...

Upton still awed by brush with Robinson legacy

PHOENIX -- As all of Major League Baseball celebrated Jackie Robinson Day on Sunday, the 65th anniversary of Robinson breaking the game's color barrier, Diamondbacks right fielder Justin Upton reflected on his small place in Robinson's legacy. In 2004, Upton won the inaugural Jackie Robinson Award as the national high school player of the year, as decided by Perfect Game...

Arizona Outfield Is Ailing

Many questioned the Arizona Diamondbacks' acquisition of Jason Kubel this winter, but the added outfield depth is key now that star outfielders Chris Young and Justin Upton are both missing time due to injury. Top prospect A.J. Pollock is also being counted on to help with the outfield situation.

Early season busts – Trade or hold? Fantasy baseball 2012

Pittsburgh Pirate Parrot Costume Update

The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4 in front of yours truly and 19,197 other people on Tuesday night at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona. The win improved the Pirates to 4-7 and moved their magic number to 77 games in pursuit of achieving my lofty preseason expectations of the Bucs- a non losing season after 19 consecutive...
