What a relief! Yesterday “hectorrondon” got back on track with a 34.50-point effort and a fifth place finish in one of FanDuel’s 50/50, double-up contests. David Price carried my squad with eight innings of eight-strikeout ball and just two earned runs allowed, but he was unable to earn the victory.Offensively, Alex Gordon came through with 8.50 points, hitting his third homer in as many games.Today I’m sticking with the Rays’ starting pitchers as well as holding over a couple players from yesterday’s winning team (catcher and outfield). Since I started going with the 50/50 games, I’ve seen my return on investment consistently go up, so we’ll stick with that format for the foreseeable future. The Padres aren’t exactly an imposing offense, and as much as I wanted to jump back on Tony Cingrani‘s bandwagon in his home start tonight against the Brewers, he does have to square off against Yovani Gallardo. Cobb only has to face Volquez. This might be the best chance at a W on the pitcher board today.Jason Castro ($2,300) — home vs. TEX (Alexi Ogando)Unless you’re willing to pay for an elite catcher, the rest of the options are pretty similar (and unspectacular). Why pay more than you have to? Castro comes at just $2,300 and has hit safely in eight of his last 10. He’s as good a bet to score a few points as any other non-elite catcher.Joey Votto ($4,500) — home vs. MIL (Yovani Gallardo)The knock on Votto this year has been his high walk rate and low homer total. Instead of being boom or bust, he’s been extremely consistent in daily leagues that reward batters for drawing walks. I only need to finish in the top half and not win outright, so I prefer the stability. I know I’ll get points from Votto. He also has a 1.038 OPS and just one strikeout in 31 career plate appearances against Gallardo.Kelly Johnson ($3,400) — home vs. SD (Edinson Volquez)I love picking on Volquez, especially with players who draw a lot of walks. Johnson’s .355 OBP this year puts him in that category. He’s also hit safely in seven of eight with two homers over that span, and he’s 4-f0r-12 (.333) in his career against Volquez.Evan Longoria ($4,200) — home vs. SD (Edinson Volquez)This pick follows the same logic as the Johnson selection with the added bonus that Longoria is a stud.Zack Cozart ($2,800) — home vs. MIL (Yovani Gallardo)For under $3,000, I feel Cozart is a great value. He’s 4-for-12 (.333) in his career against Gallardo with more homers (1) than strikeouts (0), which means he sees the ball well from him. Cozart has also collected five hits in his last three games and has scored a run in his last five games near the top of Cincinnati’s potent lineup.Oswaldo Arcia ($2,500) — home vs. BAL (Jason Hammel)I should have gone with my gut and picked Arcia yesterday as the rookie homered for the Twins. I’ll go with him today and hope it’s not a day too late. Hammel hasn’t been the same pitcher he was last year when he was on his way to a breakout season before injury derailed him. Arcia has hit safely in seven straight games and already has three homers on the year to pair with his .313 average.Mark Trumbo ($4,400) — road vs. CHW (Dylan Axelrod)Trumbo in U.S. Cellular Field is tantalizing to say the least. With homers in six of his last 10 games, I’ll gamble that he hits another today.Alex Gordon ($3,900) — home vs. NYY (Phil Hughes)It’s hard to argue against picking Gordon right now. He’s clearly seeing the ball well and driving it with power as evidence by his three straight games with a homer, and Hughes is a homer-prone starting pitcher. Gordon is 4-f0r-13 (.304) with just one strikeout in his career against Hughes.
