Round Up Image 234It was a horrible night offensively for every team besides Cory Spangenberg and the Storm. Spangenberg collected 5 hits, and McElroy and Miller both went yard as the Storm won 6-3. The rest of the affiliates combined for 6 runs and 21 hits over 5 games.

Nick Hundley-C: 0-3, 3K
Blake Tekotte-CF: 1-3
Jorge Reyes-SP: 6.0 IP, 10H, 4ER, 2BB, 2K, HR Allowed

Game 2: Tucson Padres 2,
Albuquerque Isotopes 7

Vince Belnome-1B: 1-3
Andrew Werner-SP: 4.2 IP, 6H, 3ER, 2BB, 6K
Cory Burns-RP: 1.0 IP, 4H, 4ER, BB, K
Notes: It was an extremely rough day offensively for the T-Pads. After getting shutout and only managing 6 hits in game 1, they can only garner 3 hits in game 2. Nick Hundley in particular struggled greatly. He went 0-3 with 3 strikeouts in his last game before being called up to the Padres. After a successful major league debut, Cory Burns gets shelled in his first appearance since being sent down.

San Antonio Missions 1, Springfield Cardinals 2
Reymond Fuentes-CF: 0-2, BB
Jonathan Galvez-2B: 1-4
Nathan Freiman-1B: 0-4, K
Cody Decker-LF: 0-3, BB, 2K
Rymer Liriano-RF: 1-3, BB
Ali Solis-C: 1-4, 2b, 2K
Matt Jackson-SP: 5.0 IP, 7H, ER, 5K
Notes: The Missions’ bats went quiet tonight; they only collected 5 hits throughout this game. Despite the lousy offensive output, Rymer Liriano was able to tally a single and raise his hitting streak to 9. Liriano struggled immediately after being called up to San Antonio, but has since picked up his hitting pace and is hitting .258 on the year with San Antonio.

Lake Elsinore Storm 6, Inland Empire 66ers 3
Chris Bisson-SS: 2-5, RBI
Cory Spangenberg-2B: 5-5, RBI, Run scored

Matt Branham-SP: 6.0 IP, 3H, 2BB, 8K (W, 5-2)
Kevin Quackenbush-RP: 1.0 IP, H, K (S, 23)
Notes: Cory Spangenberg has his first multi-hit game since coming off the DL. He collected an astounding 5 hits in the game, and raised his average to .290. Miller and McElroy continue to be offensive forces as both of them went yard. Miller is attempting to break out of a slump; he was hitless in 5 of his last 6 games. Kevin Quackenbush collected his 23rd save and lowered his ERA to 0.68. He has 64 strikeouts in 52 innings pitched.

Fort Wayne TinCaps 3, West Michigan Whitecaps 1
Travis Jankowski-CF: 1-4, 3b, RBI, Run scored
Jace Peterson-SS: 1-3, RBI, Run scored

Colin Rea-SP: 6.0 IP, 2H, ER, 4BB, 4K (W, 4-7)
Matthew Stites-RP: 1.0 IP, 2K (S, 11)
Notes: Colin Rea has his best start since June 8th, and he really needed it as the TinCaps only had 3 hits throughout the entire night. Matthew Stites continued to dominate; he collected his 11th save with a perfect 9th and has hasn’t allowed a single run over his last 10 appearances. He owns a minuscule 0.46 ERA on the year (39 innings). Travis Jankowski has quietly put together a 10 game hitting streak (he has 8 one hit performances during that time span). He’s hitting .293 over his last 10 games and .236 on the year.

Eugene Emeralds 0, Yakima Bears 2
Ronnie Richardson-CF: 0-3, BB, 2K
Alberth Martinez-RF: 0-3, BB, K
Jeremy Baltz-LF: 0-4, K
Dane Phillips-C: 0-4
Maxx Tissenbaum-2B: 0-2, 2BB
Goose Kallunki-1B: 2-4
Joe Ross-SP: 3.1 IP, 4H, 2ER, BB, K, HR Allowed
Brandon Alger-RP: 3.2 IP, 3H, BB, 4K
Notes: That’s the 2nd start in a row where the Emeralds’ offense has been blanketed with Joe Ross pitching. Struggling offenses have been a common theme tonight for the Padres’ minor league affiliates as Eugene could only collect 4 hits. Brandon Alger was one of the lone bright sports tonight as he threw almost 4 shutout innings and lowered his ERA to 0.79.

Daily Farm Round-Up: 8-7-12

Tim Stauffer makes another rehab start with the Storm, but the Storm’s offense struggles in a 5-1 loss. Jace Peterson, and Mike Gallic contribute greatly to a 7-3 win for Fort Wayne, and the entire Eugene offense had a productive night as they blow out the Bears 12-4.Hitting Prospect of the Day: Jace Peterson/Mike Gallic Pitching Prospect of the Day: Frank GarcesTucson Padres:...

Padres Blank Cubbies Twice In Three Game Sweep at Petco.

The Padres welcomed in Jed Hoyer and his Chicago Cubs to Petco Park this weekend and thanked them like any host should; with a three game sweep capped with a shutout on top. The Padres beat the Cubs by 2-0, 7-4, and again 2-0, the latter a five-hit shutout by Clayton Richard. The sweep gave them five wins on this short six-game home stand and 10 wins in their last 12 played at Petco...

Daily Friar 8.10.12

Padres off days are always long. I personally don't watch a lot of TV to begin with, but when I do it's usually because the Padres are playing. When I have it on I will mute it and do other things like read or something along those lines. Last night I didn't get to have that option with the off day. It feels like the Padres haven't been playing for a few days with...

Padres not throwing in the towel, but throwing money around

Last Monday, the Padres were officially sold ... we think. The sale to a group that headed by the heirs to the O'Malley family of Dodger fame, professional golfer Phil Mickelson and San Diego businessman/civic leader Ron Fowler is final pending the approval of the other major league owners, a vote that could come as early as next Thursday. But the new Padres' ownership...

MLB Insiders: San Diego Padres

The Pirates open a three-game series with San Diego on Friday night at PNC Park. Right-hander James McDonald will be on the hill for the Bucs. The Padres will counter with Edinson Volquez.

MadFriars' Player of the Month: July

In Tucson Jedd Gyorko continues to produce and Nate Freiman is nothing but steady in San Antonio. Tommy Medica is opening some eyes for the Storm and Kyle Gaedele is starting to show some of the tools that got him drafted. In short-season ball some late round draft picks are opening some eyes.

Daily Friar 8.7.12

It wasn't but a few days ago that the Padres designated Kip Wells for assignment and recalled Eric Stults. As of last night, I think the move has really paid off. Stults, along with the bullpen, shut down the Cubs and en route to a 2-0 win for the Padres. Anthony Rizzo made his return to the Petco for the first time since being traded, and he did exactly what he did while he...

Daily Friar 8.8.12

That game was pretty fun to watch last night, but so has most Padres baseball as of late. What I really liked though was that we were hitting with runners in scoring position again, which is always a nice asset to have during any game. The team went 4-10 last night with RISP, which is a respectable number compared to their season average. The only nervous part to the game was in...

Mickelson: I won't meddle in Padres

Don't worry, San Diego, Phil Mickelson promises to leave the Padres' baseball decisions to the baseball people. Mickelson is part of an ownership group that includes former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Peter O'Malley that recently agreed to purchase the San Diego Padres. The deal must be approved by Major League Baseball. Mickelson spoke Thursday after the opening round...

Daily Friar 8.9.12

If only these Padres were playing the same way at the beginning of the season, then we could be looking at a potential playoff run. Unfortunately though, they dug a huge hole that they won't be able to get themselves out of. They did, however, return the favor to the Cubs from back in May. The Cubs swept us in Wrigley, and the Padres did just that in the latest series here at...

MadFriars' Farm Report August 7

Pittsburgh Pirates vs San Diego Padres – Game 112

First and foremost……. That felt good. What’s not good is the Padres.  They kind of suck.  In fact, on the road.  Only one National League team has more road losses than the Padres.  The Pirates need to sweep this series.  Anything less is a loss in my opinion. First Pitch:  7:05 PM EST Where ti [...]

Padres-Pirates Preview

Based on how they've performed at PNC Park coupled with San Diego's play on the road, the Pittsburgh Pirates should be able to end their lengthy home losing streak to the Padres. Of course, if scheduled starter James McDonald's struggles continue, another defeat could be imminent. McDonald again hopes to break out of his second-half funk and help the Pirates avoid losing...
