Found June 27, 2012 on Friarhood:
The problem I've been having with the pitching staff this year, besides the fact that it's a revolving door, is that they have a hard time getting out of unnecessary jams. Case in point last night, Kip Wells throws the ball away during a possible double play chance. Instead of locking down and getting the next two outs like a good pitcher would, the Astros got the better part of him and put up 4 runs in the innings. Errors and bad pitching are a terrible combination. Wells gave up 5 runs last night, only 2 earned. I'm sorry but if you're going to give up runs they should all be earned. Especially when you were the one that made the error in the first place. In other quick news, Athony Rizzo went 2-4 with an RBI double in his Cubs debut. BP Unfiltered: San Diego Might Make History by R.J. Anderson

On Tuesday night, Kip Wells started a big-league game for the first time since October 2009.  By starting for the Padres, Wells became the 13th San Diego pitcher to do so this season. Unsurprisingly, San Diego leads the league in starters used (by two), and could set history. Since the 1998 expansion, no team has used more than 17 starters in a single season. Three teams, however...

Should the Padres consider a Chase Headley trade?

Jon Heyman of CBS is reporting that there is apparently a decent bit of interest in San Diego Padres third baseman Chase Headley. Headley currently has a .780 OPS for the last place Padres, and is just 28 years-old. He's only being paid $3.475 million this year, and is under team control for the next two seasons. Since he became a regular in 2009 for San Diego, Headley...

Padres recall hard-throwing righty Cashner

The Padres recalled ight-handed pitcher Andrew Cashner from Double-A San Antonio and optioned right-hander Brad Brach to Triple-A Tucson. Cashner, 25, was optioned to San Antonio on June 10 after his first start with the Padres in Milwaukee one day before. He made 27 relief appearances for the Padres this season, going 3-3 with a 3.81 ERA and 34 strikeouts and 18 walks in 28 games...

Daily Friar 6.28.12

Clayton Richard pitched a gem last night. 7 innings of 2 hit ball. The only problem is that one of the hits was a homerun. Now when your starting pitcher puts up only 1 run you expect to win. Especially since the previous two games were played with 8 runs and 3 runs respectively. However, this is the Padres and when your pitcher pitches a gem you don't put up any offense. At...

Padres 8, Astros 7(10)

Carlos Quentin hit an RBI double in the 10th inning to lift the San Diego Padres to an 8-7 win over the Houston Astros on Monday night. Chase Headley walked with one out and stole second before Quentin drove him in with a drive to right-center against Brandon Lyon (0-2). San Diego grabbed a 7-6 lead on Jesus Guzman's two-run homer in the eighth inning but Jason Castro tied...

Daily Friar 6.26.12

The good thing right now, as bad as the Padres are, is that they are beating the other bad teams in both leagues. Even though it took 10 innings to win last night, they did win. The other nice thing was that the offense showed up. The team put up 8 runs, which is always nice to see. Tonight will be interesting as the Frankenstein experiment that is our pitching rotation continues...

Astros come up short in 10th against Padres

HOUSTON (AP) -- Carlos Quentin hit an RBI double in the 10th inning to lift the San Diego Padres to an 8-7 win over the Houston Astros on Monday night. Chase Headley walked with one out and stole second before Quentin drove him in with a drive to right-center against Brandon Lyon (0-2). San Diego grabbed a 7-6 lead on Jesus Guzman's two-run homer in the eighth inning but Jason...

Young fan at Padres-Astros game throws baseball back onto field (Video)

We've had an epidemic recently in the major leagues of young fans being given baseballs only to throw them back onto the field, and it happened again Wednesday night at Minute Maid Park as the Houston Astros hosted the San Diego Padres. Your browser does not support iframes. In the top of the second inning, Padres batter Yonder Alonso hit the foul ball into the stands on...

Padres will listen to offers on Chase Headley

The San Diego Padres are in no position to contend this year and will probably become sellers at the trade deadline. One of their best players is Chase Headley and as Jon Heyman of CBSSports writes “while they head into the trade season with no intention to deal Headley, they will at least listen.” The price for Headley won't be cheap though. Heyman adds that a Padres official...
