Daisuke Matuzaka may have thrown his last pitch in a Red Sox jersey. According to Japanese news outlet Nikkan Sports, Matsuzaka will inform the team that he has decided to have season-ending Tommy John surgery on his injured pitching elbow. We hinted that Tommy John surgery was a distinct possibility the day after Dice-K was placed on the disabled list with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow. Typical recovery time for the surgery is 12 to 18 months. Next season marks the final year in Matsuzaka’s contract, which means it’s possible that he’ll never pitch again for Boston. A source tells Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports that Dice-K is “leaning toward” surgery after specialist Dr. Lewis Yocum found a significant tear in the right-hander’s pitching elbow on Tuesday in Los Angeles. According to Brown, Dr. Yocum recommended that Matsuzaka undergo the procedure, and the Japanese righty will discuss that recommendation with the team. MLB.com...
