According to a tweet from SI.com’s Jon Heyman, Daisuke Matsuzaka will have Tommy John surgery on his injured right elbow, and the procedure will be performed by Dr. Lewis Yocum. Heyman reports that Dice-K will likely undergo surgery next week, ending his season. Recovery time for the surgery is anywhere from 12 to 18 months, which means it’s possible that Matsuzaka has thrown his last pitch in a Red Sox Jersey. At the very least, he won’t be uniform for the Sox again in 2011. The right-hander was 3-3 with a 5.30 ERA in eight appearances (seven starts) this year. The Red Sox have yet to officially announce that Dice-K is having surgery, although they were reportedly scheduled to meet with the right-hander on Thursday. He has two years left on his contract ($10 million each season) and can become a free agent after next year.
