Darin Mastroianni attempts to make a diving catch for the Minnesota Twins in Spring Training. The Minnesota Twins have recalled outfielder Darin Mastroianni (Saratoga 2006) from the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings of the International League. Mastoianni made his Minnesota debut on Thursday, May 10, against the Toronto Blue Jays. He started in left field and batted eighth against the Blue Jays wearing number 19. The Blue Jays however proved to be too much for the Twins at Target Field in a 6-2 victory.

The former Saratoga Phillies outfielder began the 2012 calendar year as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays organization. Mastroianni was drafted by the Blue Jays in 2007 (16th round) and spent five years in the farm system before being recalled by Toronto last August. He made his Major League debut against the Kansas City Royals on Aug. 24, 2011 and went 0-for-2. However in February, Mastroianni was placed on waivers. He was claimed and signed by the Minnesota Twins.

The Mount Kisco, N.Y., native opened the season with the New Britain Rock Cats of the Double-A Eastern League. Mastroianni scored six runs, pounded out five hits and stole four bases in nine games to earn a promotion to the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings of the International League. Mastroianni erupted for Rochester and over 20 games put together a .347 batting average, 11 RBI, 27 hits, 10 runs and 10 stolen bases. He paced the team in batting average, triples and stolen bases. Darin batted .300 with 12 hits, six RBI and six stolen bases in his final 10 games played for the Red Wings.

Darin played for the Oneonta Outlaws in 2006 when they were known as the Saratoga Phillies. He led the team to its first summer collegiate baseball league championship. The starting shortstop was a league all-star and he captured the All-Star Game Home Run Derby at Watertown’s Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds. Mastroianni led the entire league with eight triples and he topped the Phillies in batting average (.348), hits (54), total bases (77), slugging percentage (.497) and defensive assists (118).
