Washington Nationals skipper Davey Johnson won National League Manager of the Year today in a landslide, taking 23 of 32 first place votes and outdistancing his closest rival, Dusty Baker of the Cincinnati Reds, 131 to 77. Johnson joins CF Bryce Harper, who won NL Rookie of the Year yesterday, as members of the Nationals receiving postseason honors.
Johnson, 69, led the Nationals to their first ever playoff berth, their first ever division title and the best record in Major League Baseball at 98-64.
Johnson recently signed a contract extension to manage the Nationals in 2013, telling reporters he has unfinished business with the team -- a World Series title. After the 2013 season ends, Johnson, who will be 70 at that time, plans to retire as a Major League manager and become a consultant for the Washington baseball franchise.
