On Friday, Major League Baseball announced that it was expanding its playoff system to include an extra wild card team. The change was made mainly to improve the regular season and keep an extra team in contention. At the end of the season, the two wild card winners will face each other in a one-game playoff to determine who moves on to the divisional round.
Reactions to the expansion have been mixed thus far, but Red Sox slugger David Ortiz may have taken the cake on Thursday when asked for his thoughts. His issue? Having to pack up your stuff and travel just for a one-game playoff.
“One game? That’s kind of crazy,” designated hitter David Ortiz said according to ESPN.com. “You know how many things we’ve got to move around and pack for one game? It’d make more sense for two wild cards to play at least a two-out-of-three series while the other teams take a break for three days because they won their divisions.”
Take the sentence about having to move around and pack out, and Ortiz...

Red Sox Live Blog: David Ortiz, Dan Butler Go Deep As Sox Dominate Twins 10-2Yay Papi! Yay Dan Butler! Wait, who? This guy. He's on pace to catch Ruth. (I suppose all the rookies are, at this point.) But seriously, it's nice to see a rookie make an impression so soon.
FORT MYERS, Fla. –– Another setback has slowed Carl Crawford's bid for a starting spot on Opening Day. After a few swings on Tuesday, the Red Sox outfielder sensed pain in his left wrist –– the same one that was surgically repaired in early January. He aggravated it more during bunting drills on Wednesday and will be shut down for a few days. "You're always concerned...
Well, it looks like another Major League Baseball team is out to limit alcohol and its effects on performance. As newly crowned Chicago Cubs president, Theo Epstein wants his players to get a good night's rest before each game. After all of the news that came out regarding the Red Sox clubhouse this offseason, it seems only fitting that Epstein would impose some sort of regulation...
Last week, new Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine tried to force himself into the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry by throwing jabs at Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez. And while all the banter is meaningless and for the birds, the Yankees just won any sort of pre-season back and forth with Valentine. During spring training in Fort Myers, Florida, the Red Sox Foundation hold an annual ...
Jason Varitek's retirement has opened up a job as the backup catcher in Boston. Give young Ryan Lavarnway every chance to get the gig.
FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) Josh Beckett pitched two scoreless innings and Lars Anderson hit a grand slam, leading manager Bobby Valentine and the Boston Red Sox to an 8-3 victory over a Minnesota Twins split squad in their spring training opener Sunday.
Beckett gave up one hit with two strikeouts for Boston, which beat Northeastern 25-0 and Boston College 6-3 Saturday in exhibition...
It is time for the start of the Terry Francona impersonation era!
The Tim Kurkjian impressions have been abundant during this years spring training camp and just when they were starting to get old, this Terry Francona impersonation saved the day. Watch as quirky ex-BoSox’s closer Jonathon Papelbon does a spot on impersonation of his old manager, chew and all. Nice!

8 a.m. ET: The Red Sox got a head start in the pursuit of the Mayor's Cup -- that is if Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire plans to give it up. Both teams will go at it again on Monday. This time, the game will take place at Hammonds Stadium, the Twins' facility in Fort Myers. On Sunday, Red Sox first base prospect Lars Anderson was the unlikely hero to blow the game open against...
