It could be a complete coincidence, but the Red Sox have played particularly well since David Ortiz called a players-only meeting for the team back on May 11. Since that day, Boston has gone 12-5 — their best stretch of baseball this season. The most obvious reason for Ortiz’s meeting was that his team was well under .500 and playing horribly. As we recently found out, another reason may have been that he was tired of the way his teammates were treating their new manager. “I was feeling really bad about Bobby the way things were going and it was because I can see the frustration on his face,” Ortiz said according to ESPNBoston.com. “His hands were tied because he was trying to do things to help us out and it wasn’t working, but it wasn’t his fault. We weren’t executing, so at the end of the day the manager gets blamed, but it’s not his fault. He might make a move, but we need to execute. “I saw his frustrations and I felt like s***. Part of the reason why is we need to get together ...

Valentine: Pedroia likely out on Tuesday

According to Bobby Valentine, Dustin Pedroia is likely to miss tonight’s game. “Right now, I don’t think he’ll play Tuesday, if I was a betting man, but don’t bet on it. It’s just swollen. You could tell there’s something there.” He left yesterday’s game with a jammed right thumb in the 6th inning and he is expected to undergo tests on his thumb to make sure...

'Baseball Big Three' of David Ortiz, Kevin Youkilis, Will Middlebrooks Leads Way to Victory (Video)

Figuring out how to get Kevin Youkilis and Will Middlebrooks in the lineup together can be a headache at times, but they showed why it's worth it on Wednesday night. David Ortiz, Youk and Middlebrooks all homered and the Red Sox rallied against the Tigers to win 6-4 and take their third straight over Detroit. NESN Nation's Dan Duquette is in a basketball mood, so he's...

David Ortiz and Will Middlebrooks each hit two-run homers, Kevin Youkilis had a solo shot and the surging Boston Red Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 6-4 on Wednesday night. The Red Sox have won for the 14th time in 19 games but remain in last in a jammed AL East. Miguel Cabrera went 4 for 5 with three doubles and drove in a run for Detroit, which has dropped the first three of a four...

Red Sox get to Verlander, beat Tigers

BOSTON (AP) -- David Ortiz homered and hit two doubles, and the Boston Red Sox moved above .500 for the first time this season, tagging Justin Verlander for 10 hits in a 6-3 win over the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night. Verlander (5-3) lost his second straight start since taking a no-hitter into the ninth inning against Pittsburgh on May 18. The reigning American League MVP and...

Bobby Valentine Thinks Dustin Pedroia Could Miss Time, Mike Aviles Believes He'll Be in Lineup

BOSTON –– Dustin Pedroia dove down, snagged a grounder and fired a pinpoint throw to first base. It was a defensive masterpiece, one that retired Detroit's Danny Worth and ended the fifth inning. But it also resulted in an injury. Following the play in Monday's 7-4 victory, the Red Sox second baseman exited the game with a jammed right thumb. Pedroia was likely undergoing...

Dave Roberts Steal Against Yankees in 2004 ALCS Is Ketel One Honorable Moment

The Red Sox were a championship starved franchise for the better part of 86 years. In the 2004 ALCS, boston appeared primed for yet another fruitless season after falling behind 3-0 in a series against the rival Yankees. One quick swipe of a base changed all that. Dave Roberts, who came over in a trade at midseason, stole second base in the bottom of the ninth inning to help tie...

Boston Red Sox escape Justin Verlander and the rain to move over .500 for the first time all season

Ortiz and Youkilis celebrate after a 3-run double by Daniel Nava. The Boston Red Sox were able to rough up last season's American League Cy Young and MVP winner, Justin Verlander, last night in a 6-3 victory. Daniel Nava hit a bases clearing double in the fourth scoring Kevin Youkilis, David Ortiz, and Scott Posednik that made the score 4-0.  Daniel Bard pitched for Boston...

Ryan Sweeney's Return to Lineup Just the Spark Red Sox Offense May Need

Editor's note: NESN.com is going to tell the story of the 2012 Red Sox in Bobby Valentine’s words. Each game day, we will select the best Valentine quote that sums up the day for the Red Sox. Ryan Sweeney's bright Hollywood smile said more about the outfielder's excitement to be back in the Red Sox lineup than any of his postgame comments on Monday. After missing the...

Bobby Valentine Pushing Right Buttons, But Adrian Gonzalez in Right Field May Not Be Long-Term Fix (Video)

The Red Sox offense packs plenty of punch when Adrian Gonzalez, Will Middlebrooks and Kevin Youkilis are all in the lineup, but that requires some unconventional managing from Bobby Valentine. Gonzalez is a Gold Glove caliber first baseman who has little outfield experience, so the team obviously takes a hit defensively when he's put in right field like he has been recently....

Jon Lester, Red Sox Have 'Best Stuff of the Year' Despite What Numbers Show

Editor's note: NESN.com is going to tell the story of the 2012 Red Sox in Bobby Valentine's words. Each game day, we will select a Valentine quote that sums up the day for the Red Sox. It's not always about the numbers. The Red Sox have put up plenty of gaudy statistics this year in games that devolved into ugly losses, but as they've hit their stride lately, production...

Daniel Nava to Lead Off for Red Sox in Memorial Day Matinee Against Tigers

Another day, another lineup configuration. Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine has been forced to move some parts around this season, and he made a major change again on Monday, planting Daniel Nava atop the Boston order. Nava has played well since his arrival to the big club this season, hitting .286, and more importantly, getting on base at an impressive .448 clip. Mike Aviles, who...

Bobby V: Pedroia back "sooner than expected"

Bobby Valentine joined WEEI's The Big Show this afternoon for his weekly appearance and had a positive outlook on Dustin Pedroia's return. "We just had a meeting before I came here, [GM Ben Cherington] and I and Dustin. He’s on the mend. He heals pretty quickly. He’s a determined guy," said Valentine. "I don't think he's going to have to swing...

Kelly Shoppach, Jarrod Saltalamacchia Could Be Options to Back Up Nick Punto at Second Base

BOSTON -- Bobby Valentine was already short on outfielders. Now, the Red Sox skipper has limited infielders at his disposal. While the training staff continues to monitor the swelling in Dustin Pedroia's right thumb, the Red Sox will rely on Nick Punto to patrol second base. The team will do so, at least on Wednesday, without a capable and experienced backup. If anything occurs...
