Found July 21, 2012 on Friarhood:
While some clubs in playoff contention are looking to make significant additions ahead of the trade deadline other contenders are in a better position with regards to weaknesses on their roster. They are approaching this deadline looking to add depth, perhaps in the form of a bench bat and/or middle relief help. Teams looking for a guy that can come off the bench late in a pivotal game and get on base should call the Padres about the services of OF-1B Mark Kotsay.

Kotsay has been more than solid as a pinch-hitter for the Friars posting a triple-slash line of .296/.367/.383 in 24 AB in that role. In 2011 he hit .293 with an OBP of .356 in 41 AB as a pinch-hitter with the Brewers. In addition to his pinch-hitting prowess Kotsay brings veteran leadership to the clubhouse. His experience would benefit any young club down the stretch looking for a veteran presence.

I could see Kotsay fitting in well with a club like Pittsburgh who is a little short in the OF as it is and ranks just 22nd in bench OPS. The Pirates haven’t had a winning season since Barry Bonds was still plying his trade in Pittsburgh. At 52 – 40 they have a real shot to earn a playoff spot and better bench production couldn’t hurt.

Baltimore, like Pittsburgh, hasn’t been to the postseason since the 1990’s. Their bench has posted a lowly .259 OBP on the season. Of course the AL utilizes pinch-hitters far less than the NL and Kotsay’s defense, particularly in the OF (minus UZR rating in each season since 2005) means teams shouldn’t use him often in the field. Baltimore has bigger fish to fry, particularly as they try to upgrade their rotation and add OBP skills to their lineup. It is unlikely the Orioles will put too much effort into acquiring a PH specialist unless he can also help in the field.

Another club that could use a boost to their bench is the Cardinals. Their pinch-hitters have combined for just a .237 OBP on the season. Kotsay would also fit in with the Cardinal’s veteran core.

Just about every team pushing for a playoff spot would be interested in Kotsay to varying degrees. However, whoever might pursue Kotsay in the days ahead won’t be willing to pay a premium price. Don’t expect the Friars to be able to extract a premium prospect in return for Kotsay. If a deal were to be consummated the Padres would likely obtain “future considerations” in the form of cash or a low level minor leaguer.

If the Padres deal other veteran players like Huston Street, Carols Quentin and/or Chase Headley they will be devoid of veteran experience. Considering the return in a potential trade for Kotsay would essentially be inconsequential I see it far more likely the Padres hang onto Kotsay unless the OF desires to pursue a World Series title elsewhere. The Padres are playing pretty good baseball right now but if they move veterans for futures they will need the steadying influence provided by Kotsay.

Sources: Padres, Quentin close to deal

The Padres, locking up their leading slugger, are close to a three-year, $27 million extension with right fielder Carlos Quentin, according to major-league sources. Padres Close to Extending Carlos Quentin

Jon Heyman of cbssports.com is reporting that the Padres are close to a 3-year extension with Carlos Quentin.  The deal would be for 27M and with bonuses could reach 30M total.  This season Quentin has hit .279/.389/.525 in 40 games, but in 18 games at Petco National Park, Quentin is hitting .230/.309/.410.  Not a huge surprise that a Quentin, a fly ball hitter struggles at Petco...

Padres Roll Over Rockies To Win Their Third Straight Series.

The Padres won a pitcher’s duel on Sunday to take the series after splitting two high scoring contests on Friday and Saturday. The series win placed the Friars at 7-3 since the all-start break and 41-56 overall. Before the game the Padres extended cleanup hitter Carlos Quentin through 2015, uncharacteristically locking up a valuable trade commodity before the deadline. The move...

Quentin, Padres close to three-year deal

The San Diego Padres and outfielder Carlos Quentin have agreed to a three-year contract extension, the team announced Sunday. The deal is worth $27 million, according to CBSSports.com. The contract, which has a mutual option for a fourth year, has incentive clauses that could escalate the deal to $30 million. The deal effectively takes the San Diego native off the trade market...

Deadline Trade Candidate - Clayton Richard

With less than 10 days remaining before the July 31st non-waiver trade deadline passes few deals of any real significance have been made. There are a few factors contributing to the relative absence of activity so far. The newly created Wild Card in each league was intended to keep more clubs in contention longer, which has been the case, but because teams winning a Wild Card are...

Padres' Volquez one-hits Astros

Edinson Volquez has only his glove to blame for falling just short of the first no-hitter in San Diego Padres history. Volquez threw a one-hitter -- an infield single in the fourth inning that bounced off his glove -- for the first complete game and shutout of his career as the Padres beat the Houston Astros 1-0 on Thursday night. Alexi Amarista doubled and Logan Forsythe singled...

Carlos Quentin Locked Up – Why?

In 2008, Carlos Quentin had an MVP caliber season for the AL Central Division Champion White Sox. Actually, he probably would’ve won the thing if he played the last month of the season; Quentin hit .288/.394/.571 with 36 home runs and 100 RBI in just 130 games before a temper-induced wrist injury ended his year prematurely. This year – four years later, for those of you keeping...

Padres 3, Rockies 2

Will Venable drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning and Everth Cabrera had two hits and scored twice as the San Diego Padres beat the Colorado Rockies 3-2 on Sunday. Dale Thayer (2-2) pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the victory for the Padres, who have won seven of nine and three straight series for the first time this season. Huston Street retired the...

Daily Friar 7.20.12

It appears that I missed a pretty good pitching performance. I would have watched Edinson Volquez baffle the Astros last night, but I was spending the day at the movies theater seeing The Dark Knight Rises...which is awesome by the way. That is also the reason for this being posted so late this morning. Anyway back to baseball. Again the Padres throw a one hitter, and in doing so...

Signs Extension with Padres

Hot News for OF Carlos Quentin

Daily Friar 7.22.12

As the game went on last night one couldn't help but be reminded of the 22 inning affair that took place a couple years ago. The Padres and Rockies were battling it out all night in what was a pretty good game all around. The only bad thing about it was Kip Wells and his 4th inning, and the fact that it took us 12 innings to just lose the game. As a Padres fan it was disheartening...
