Samuel Deduno got brief looks in relief from the Colorado Rockies and the San Diego Padres before signing with the Minnesota Twins as a six-year minor league free agent, and he didn't exactly turn heads in spring training. He was so far down on the depth chart, in fact, that the pitching-poor Twins didn't call him up for a look until they needed a spot start on July 7. It was Deduno's first major league start. He was 29. That's hard to believe now. After baffling the Detroit Tigers in a 9-3 victory Monday at Target Field, Deduno is 4-0 with a 3.38 ERA in seven starts, and he's doing it with electric stuff. "I've never seen anything like that before in my life," said Ryan Doumit, who caught Deduno for the first time Monday. "I hope he stays with us. I know I never want to face him. I had tons of anxiety before catching him tonight because I'd caught him in between innings in other nights and thought, 'Oh my God.' He's filth...

MINNEAPOLIS The Minnesota Twins are moving to the FM dial. The team announced Wednesday that the radio broadcasts for Twins games will be on KTWN (96.3 FM) beginning in 2013. The announcement was made at Target Field during a live broadcast on KTWN with host Eric Perkins and special co-host and former Twins first baseman Kent Hrbek. The KTWN station is owned by the Pohlad family...

Capps may begin throwing again soon

MINNEAPOLIS Twins closer Matt Capps hasn't pitched since July 16 due to irritation in his right rotator cuff, but he could start throwing again Wednesday. Capps is scheduled to have an MRI on Monday, and if all goes well, he'll pick up a ball again a few days later. Capps is currently on the DL for the second time this year, as he also missed time at the end of June and...

Plouffe activated, Nishioka optioned

MINNEAPOLIS Second baseman Tsuyoshi Nishioka's return to the majors was short-lived. The Minnesota Twins optioned Nishioka back to Triple-A Rochester on Monday to make room on the roster for third baseman Trevor Plouffe. The Twins activated Plouffe from the 15-day disabled list. He was placed on the DL on July 27 (retroactive to July 21) with a bruised right thumb. Nishioka...

Twins 9, Tigers 3

Darin Mastroianni and Ryan Doumit each homered and drove in three runs, Samuel Deduno baffled the struggling Detroit Tigers for seven innings and the Minnesota Twins snapped a four-game losing streak with a 9-3 victory Monday night. Deduno (4-0) held Detroit hitless through four innings and retired nine of 10 batters before getting into trouble in the eighth. The 29-year-old right...

Twins ship Dozier to minors

The Minnesota Twins demoted shortstop Brian Dozier to Class AAA Rochester on Tuesday after their 8-4 loss to the Deroit Tigers. Dozier, who was hitting .234 and had made 15 errors in 83 games, had lost too much of his aggressiveness at the plate, assistant GM Rob Antony said. However, Antony added that if the Twins didn't think Dozier could still be their shortstop of the future...

Mastroianni 'a very exciting baseball player'

MINNEAPOLIS Twins outfielder Darin Mastroianni isn't in the starting lineup too often, but when he is he's been making the most of it. Mastroianni did exactly that on Monday, as he got the start in place of the injured Denard Span. Mastroianni went 3-for-5 with three RBI and also made a highlight reel catch in right field to propel Minnesota to a 9-3 win over the visiting...

Dozier's 10th-inning decision proves costly

MINNEAPOLIS A lot went through Twins shortstop Brian Dozier's mind as he fielded a slow roller off the bat of Rays third baseman Jeff Keppinger in the 10th inning Sunday. With the bases loaded and one out, Dozier had options -- and a choice to make. He could have tried for the force out at home for the second out with speedy Desmond Jennings at third. He could have tried to...

Twins turn deflection off pitcher into double play

In the world of baseball, sometimes a lucky bounce can turn a horrible situation into something good for the defense. During Monday night's Twins/Tigers affair, Detroit's Andy Dirks was at the plate in the fifth inning and appeared to have a base hit as he sent a screamer back towards the mound. The ball would first be deflected by Twins pitcher Samuel Denudo with his...

Eating right comes easily in the majors

MINNEAPOLIS It's 10 p.m., and a minor league baseball game has just wrapped up. Having not eaten since before their game, the players must now find dinner. There aren't any options available in the clubhouse after all, this is the minors. By this point most sitdown restaurants are closed. That leaves only a few options: McDonald's, Burger King, Taco Bell or the like...

Minnesota Twins Hammer Hapless Detroit Tigers With 18 Hits, Cruise to Easy Victory

After wilting in the Texas heat, the Detroit Tigers were looking for some cooler salvation in Minnesota. No such luck. The Twins pounded out nearly as many hits as the Rangers can, which helped lead an embarrassing 9-3 drubbing of … Continue reading →
