Free agency began at 12:01 AM EST today, and 148 players have filed for free agency, including two members of the Pittsburgh Pirates.  Those members are Derrek Lee and Ryan Ludwick, the only two eligible players from the Pirates’ roster.  Neither move is a surprise, as it is standard procedure for a free agent to file on this date.

The Pirates have five days to exclusively negotiate with Lee and Ludwick.  At 12:01 AM on Thursday they can start negotiating with other teams.  They can have discussions with other teams between now and then, although no monetary figures can be exchanged.  The Pirates are interested in bringing Lee back, although the interest in him returning might not be mutual.

Both players qualify as Type B free agents, which means the Pirates could get a draft pick in the 2012 draft for each player.  The Pirates would have to offer each player arbitration by November 23rd.  If the player accepts, they’d be a member of the 2012 team, and their salary would be determined by the arbitration process.  If the player declines, they would remain a free agent, and the Pirates would receive a first round compensation pick if they signed a major league deal elsewhere.

It’s unlikely that Ludwick would land a pick, as the arbitration price would land him a raise over his $6.775 M salary in 2011.  Since he would be unlikely to receive more on the open market, he’d be a risk to accept arbitration, which wouldn’t be good for the Pirates.  Their 2012 outfield projects to be Andrew McCutchen, Jose Tabata, and Alex Presley, which would make Ludwick a $7 M bench player.

Lee, on the other hand, could land a pick, as the Pirates want him back and wouldn’t be risking as much if he accepted arbitration.  Under arbitration he’d receive a raise over his $8.5 M total compensation from the 2011 season, which wouldn’t be a bad price for his production.  If he declined and signed elsewhere, the Pirates would get a compensation pick.

The Pirates hold options for Ryan Doumit, Chris Snyder, Paul Maholm, and Ronny Cedeno.  The deadline for those option year decisions must come by 11:59 PM EST on Monday night.  The Pirates are expected to decline the options of Doumit, Snyder, and Maholm, while Ronny Cedeno is a candidate to be picked up.  If the options are declined, the players would become free agents, and the Pirates would retain exclusive negotiating rights through Wednesday.  In the cases of Doumit and Snyder, the Pirates could receive draft pick compensation, as long as they offer arbitration by November 23rd and the other side declines and signs elsewhere.

Pirates Outright Aaron Thompson to AAA

Along with the moves that were announced earlier today, the Pittsburgh Pirates have also outrighted left handed pitcher Aaron Thompson to AAA Indianapolis.  This is the second time Thompson has been outrighted off of the 40-man roster, which means he can elect to be a free agent, rather than accepting the assignment.  The move opens a 6th spot on the 40-man roster.  The 40-man...

Winter Leagues 10/30 — Another Homer For Hague

Sunday’s winter league action for some Pirates’ players and friends: DOMINICAN LEAGUE Toros del Este  5,  Estrellas de Oriente  1 Each team posted just 6 hits, but Los Toros made them count.  Los Estrellas scored first with a solo homer in the 3rd.  Former Pirate farmhand CF Rich Thompson singled in that inning also, but didn’t score.  Matt Hague tied the...

Pirates decline options for Cedeno, Maholm Doumit, Snyder

We knew that Paul Maholm, Ryan Doumit, and Chris Snyder were likely gone…but Ronny Cedeno too? That one is a surprise…and to me, a disappointment. I sure hope Neal Huntington isn’t planning on heading in to 2012 with Chase d’Arnaud as the starting shortstop. He’s got a lot of work to do this winter. ©2011 Raise the Jolly Roger. Pirates’ Cedeno, Walker Named Gold Glove Finalists

According to Rob Biertempfel at the Trib, the Pittsburgh Pirates have two Gold Glove finalists from their infield last season: short stop Ronny Cedeno and second baseman Neil Walker. The Gold Glove is arguably one of the biggest jokes of an award in all of professional sports. Advanced statistics are continually ignored and the award is repeatedly given to a player who’s name...

Ronny Cedeno vs. Replacements

The Pirates declined Ronny Cedeno's option today, which has generated some serious buzz among Pirate fans. It has especially interested me, because I am in serious opposition to the decision. I believe that bringing Cedeno back for another year for $3 million made all the sense in the world. Some people have been asking me why, so I'll tell you. First, let's take a look...

End of the Season Postmortem: The 2011 Pittsburgh Pirates

It was a tale of two seasons for the Pirates in 2011. In their first 100 games, the Pirates went 53-47 and found themselves tied for the NL Central lead. In the last 62 games, they went 19-43, clinching a 19th consecutive losing season and falling to fourth place in the Central. So which Pirates are the real Pirates? Is their epic losing streak nearing an end, or will 2012 bring...

Pirates decline Ronny Cedeno's option

With the decisions on their options due today, the Pirates did the expected and declined Paul Maholm, Ryan Doumit, and Chris Snyder's options, but they also came out of left field and declined Ronny Cedeno's option, as well. As previously discussed, Cedeno's not a super-star, but he played solid defense at shortstop last year and that makes him a valuable player, especially...

The 1904 Season: Part Two

As mentioned previously, the Pittsburgh Pirates had lost their best starter to injury, Deacon Phillippe, on June 16 after his 5-1 win. They stood in 4th place in the NL standings, just six games out of first place. Without Phillippe though, it was going to be tough to just keep up the same pace they were on so unless they could jump over three teams in the standings, their three...

Gerrit Cole to Start the AFL Rising Stars Game

Gerrit Cole, the first overall pick in the 2011 draft, and the top prospect in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ system, will start the Arizona Fall League’s Rising Stars game, which takes place on November 5th.  The game will be broadcast on the MLB Network, with Cole going up against left handed pitcher and fellow 2011 first round pick Danny Hultzen. Cole has made three starts...

AFL Recap 10/31: Gerrit Cole Makes His Fourth Start

The Mesa Solar Sox won 3-1 today against Phoenix, with the Pittsburgh Pirates pitching prospects combining for six strong innings.  They were led by Gerrit Cole, who made his third start of the season.  Cole pitched three innings, allowing one run on three hits, with a walk and three strikeouts.  The one run came on a home run to lead off the second inning.  Cole was again hitting...

E6 - Pirates Decline Cedeno's Option

Unbelievable. Everyone expected the Pirates to pass on the options of Paul Maholm and Ryan Doumit, but now the news comes out that they have also passed on Ronny Cedeno and will let him test free agency. This one is just mind boggling. Sure, Cedeno is by no means a great shortstop, he's not even that good of a player, however, when you look at the Pirates situation, it makes...

Cedeno, 3 other veterans cut loose by Pirates

The Pirates declined club options Monday on catchers Chris Snyder and Ryan Doumit, shortstop Ronny Cedeno and left-handed starter Paul Maholm, the team announced. The club was not expected to pick up the options on Snyder, Maholm or Doumit, though Cedeno seemed a possibility.

Pirates Decline Options On Maholm, Snyder

The Pirates formally told lefty Paul Maholm they will not pick up his 2012 option for $9.75MM, tweets Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.  Instead, they'll pay a $750K buyout.  Maholm commented, "The day I was put on the DL, I realized my time in Pittsburgh was done." The Pirates also formally told catcher Chris Snyder they're declining his $6...
