Seattle Mariners Designate Chone Figgins For Assignment

Chone Figgins was given a lot of money when he came to Seattle from Los Angeles.  The 34-year old outfielder is making $8 million next season, but he will make be making it in Seattle.  The Seattle Mariners announced yesterday that they were designating Figgins for assignment. According to Greg Johns of MLB.com, the Mariners decided to part ways with Figgins because of his...

Should The Phillies Take A Chance On Chone Figgins?

Figgins seemed to lose himself while playing in Seattle. Could relocating to Philadelphia get his career back on track? Photo: AP With Chone Figgins being designated for assignment by the Mariners yesterday, all signs point to the once productive player hitting the free agent market. Ian Riccaboni and I sat down to discuss whether Figgins might be an option worth exploring for the...

Mariners sever ties with Chone Figgins (finally)

The Seattle Mariners have designated Chone Figgins for assignment, three years after signing him to a four year, $36 million deal that hurt the team more than it helped it. Seattle will eat the $8 million Figgins is due to earn in 2013. In three seasons with the Mariners, Figgins provided Seattle with -0.8 fWAR in 308 games. He was demoted from a starting position in 2011, and...

MLB Opinion: Chone Figgins Not an Option for Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies are open to almost any option that would fill the gaping hole that they have at third base. That almost should not include the recently designated for assignment Chone Figgins. In the old days the Phillies would go after a guy like Figgins and then do a public relations job on their fans as to why they thought he would return to the player he was four years...

Bryan LaHair set to join Japanese team

Bryan LaHair went from unheard-of to the National League All-Star team in 2012. He’s set to depart the major leagues just as quick. LaHair, who struggled in the second half, was recently designated for assignment and now appears to be headed to Japan. The Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks are on the verge of signing LaHair who spent all of 2012 with the Chicago Cubs. Already a trade candidate...

On Chone Figgins and His Player Type

Following is a very basic list of things we know to be true about Chone Figgins: He used to be very successful at baseball Lately he has been far less successful at baseball Tuesday night he was finally dropped by the Mariners Relative to other players, he is little There’s a lot more to Chone Figgins than that — there’s a lot more to everybody than that — but that’s...

What is Japanese for LaBomb?

Bryan LaHair was designated for assignment today. I think we generally hoped he would have a teeny tiny bit of trade value, but maybe he didn't or maybe the Cubs thought they should do right by him and just let him go so he can pursue an opportunity elsewhere (the talks of Japan are most [...]

Chone Figgins Wasn't THE Worst Player In MLB

Looking back at 2009, you have to wonder just what happened to Chone Figgins. In Figgins contract and career year, he hit .298/.395/.393 with 42 stolen bases, led the AL in walks and played world class defense at third base. Figgins posted a 7.5 rWAR (Baseball-Reference wins above replacement) that trailed only Joe Mauer (7.6), Chase Utley (8.0), Ben Zobrist (8.3) and Albert...

Chone Figgins? Sorry, I Don’t Think So.

I was reading MetsBlog’s take by Matt Cerrone on why he feels the Mets should jump on the recently released Chone Figgins. Figgins was pretty terrible last season. I’m talking Jason Bay-level terrible. He was no better in 2011. To be an upgrade for the Mets, he wouldn’t even have to be close to what he did 2009. I mean, his 2007, 2008 would be a significant upgrade, frankly...

Bryan LaHair agrees to contract with Japanese team

Bryan LaHair will go to Japan for the 2013 season. The 2012 National League All-Star has signed a contract worth $4.5 million to play the next two seasons for the Softbank Hawks. LaHair was designated for assignment by the Cubs earlier this week and would have been in line for a contract worth the league minimum had he opted to remain in the US. In 2012 LaHair got off to a strong...

Cubs Designate Bryan LaHair For Assignment as They Prepare For the Rule 5 Draft

As the Rule Five draft looms in the near future, the deadline for teams to set their 40 man roster arrives today. With that being the case, the Chicago Cubs made a flurry of moves to ensure that players who would be vulnerable to the draft, that the club valued, would be protected. In doing so, the Cubs added pitchers Trey McNutt and Robert Whitenack as well as infielders Christian...

Cubs Make Roster Moves and a Trade

Today was the deadline to add players to the 40-man so they would't be eligible for the Rule 5 draft. The winners were: RHP Trey McNutt, RHP Robert Whitenack, 3B Christian Villanueva and INF Logan Watkins. Bryan LaHair was desginated for assignment and RHP Carlos Gutierrez was waived (I swear I don't even know who that is). LaHair is apparently going to sign to play in Japan...
