Greatness. Sometimes you expect to see it and even when you do, it’s still amazing when something happens that reminds you of why greatness was expected all along. We’ll wax rhapsodic about a certain All-Star’s greatness in due course. But first… A match up happened on Tuesday between two teams that were on most short-lists for contending teams in the American League in 2013. The Detroit Tigers are, of course, the defending AL Champions and two-time defending AL Central Champions. The Toronto Blue Jays, meanwhile, completed an off-season of wild player accumulation where they stockpiled talent on top of the solid core already on hand from the power-laden group assembled in 2012. Game One in the series featured a confrontation on the hill between Anibal Sanchez for the Tigers and Brandon Morrow for the Jays. Both clubs are off to rather ordinary starts as Toronto was 2-4 while the Tigers had managed to level their record at 3-3 by winning their first home series against the Yankees o...

Valverde throws bullpen show

DETROIT Jose Valverde has worked through his passport problems, and threw a bullpen session Wednesday at extended spring training in Lakeland, Fla. Valverde is scheduled to throw one inning Friday in an extended spring training game, and then to throw one or two innings Monday in a scrimmage. He signed a minor league contract last week with the Detroit Tigers, and is expected...

Tigers' Martinez cuts thumb on bat rack, sits out

Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez missed Tuesday's 7-3 win over Toronto after cutting his thumb on the bat rack at Comerica Park. Martinez needed eight stitches in his right thumb after the mishap Sunday. He was listed as day-to-day. Martinez hurt himself after an at-bat in Detroit's 7-0 loss to the New York Yankees. It was not clear how the accident occurred. The...

Don’t Sleep on Prince Fielder’s Speed

At two different points in yesterday’s Tigers-Blue Jays game in Detroit, it appeared the game could hinge on, of all things, Prince Fielder’s speed. The Tigers scored a run in the bottom of the first after Fielder beat out what looked like a sure double play ball. Later, with a two-run lead in the sixth, Fielder legged out an infield single to give the Tigers two on with two...

Tigers' Kelly robs Blue Jays of a home run

DETROIT Don Kelly probably wasn't even supposed to start Tuesday's game but he ended up making the play of the game. Hot-hitting Blue Jays catcher J.P. Arencibia led off the second inning and absolutely smoked one of Anibal Sanchez's pitches. It was headed out of the park -- until Kelly leaped and brought it back in. "I didn't know how far it was going to...

Blue Jays fan Tries to Scale Wall After Running Onto Field (Video)

I really hope being banned from the ballpark was worth the thrill of running onto the field during a live game for this Toronto Blue Jays fan, I know I enjoyed it. During the Blue Jays 13-0 defeat the Boston Red Sox at the Rogers Centre on Sunday, this fan felt compelled to lift the spirits of the home supporters, in what was a deeply depressing game. First the fan sprinted to second...

Hunter notches career hit No. 2,000

DETROIT Torii Hunter lined a single up the middle in the sixth inning Tuesday to register his 2,000th hit, becoming the 14th active player to reach that milestone. Thats a big career accomplishment, and hes also on an impressive tear in his first week as a Tiger. Hunter has 14 hits in his first seven games and is batting .424. Hes had six multihit games, joining Tigers Hall of...

Blue Jays Look Good on Paper, But May Be Overvalued in AL East

The Toronto Blue Jays were the story of baseball’s offseason, acquiring Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle, Josh Johnson and others from the Marlins as well as trading for NL Cy Young Award winner R.A. Dickey from the Mets. The Jays haven’t been to the playoffs since winning consecutive World Series in 1992-93 but were installed as Bovada betting favorites to capture the AL East this season...

What The Hell Are The Fans Drinking At Toronto Blue Jays Games?

Mets Card of the Week: 2013 R.A. Dickey, redux

2013 TOPPS HERITAGE MEMORABLE MOMENTS R.A. DICKEY As promised, I’ve now opened a full box of 2013 Topps Heritage. And I am here to tell you that this set is very generous in the R.A. Dickey department. I mean, it has more R.A.s than a college dorm. It has more Dickeys than an Orvis catalog. Our dear, departed Cy Young winner appears on three separate pitching leaders cards, a...

Tigers Take Opener vs Blue Jays, 7-3

WP: Sanchez (1-0) LP: Morrow (0-1) DETROIT, Michigan– The Tigers defeated the Toronto Blue Jays in the opening game of a three game series today at Comerica Park by a score of 7-3. Detroit scored early in the game and never relinquished the lead. Miguel Cabrera was the offensive star of the game, [...]

Tigers 11, Blue Jays 1

Miguel Cabrera set the tone in the first inning, stealing third before the opposing pitcher even started his motion. On a chilly day when the ball didn't appear to be carrying, the Detroit Tigers kept their legs moving. Cabrera tripled and scored twice, and the Tigers knocked Josh Johnson out of the game with a five-run second inning en route to an 11-1 victory over the Toronto...

Tigers 7, Blue Jays 3

AL MVP Miguel Cabrera hit his first homer of the season and drove in four runs, left fielder Don Kelly made a home run-robbing catch and the Detroit Tigers beat the Toronto Blue Jays 7-3 Tuesday. The Blue Jays, who spent millions during the winter to upgrade their roster, fell to 2-5 for their worst start since 2004. Cabrera, coming off his Triple Crown season, had four hits and...
