It’s funny how a surge by the Detroit Tigers can quiet the storm. Jim Leyland’s team has won 10 of their last 12 games and are within 1.5 games of the 1st place White Sox. The top 2 teams in the sluggish AL Central will square off at Comerica Park this weekend for bragging rights.
A few short weeks ago most fans were in a full-fledged panic mode. But when a team roughs up the red-hot Anaheim Angels the way the Tigers did this week it soothes the inner complainer. It reminds us all that it’s a 162-game season and it’s awfully tough for the best team not to prevail.
And yes, the Tigers are the best team in the Central. As I tweeted about a month ago, this team will make the playoffs. Guaranteed. But let’s not get lost in a video board game of hat shuffle. The AL Central isn’t the prize this team seeks. It is a World Series title.

Tigers' Dirks to rehab soon
DETROIT -- The Tigers' disabled list should be getting shorter, sooner rather than later.
After a couple of good days of work, outfielder Andy Dirks could begin a rehabilitation assignment as soon as Sunday night. Dirks has been on the DL since May 31 with right Achilles tendinitis.
"I feel good enough to play right now," Dirks said. "This is by far the best...
Despite start, Tigers half-game out
DETROIT -- Barely more than one month ago, the Detroit Tigers were five games under .500 and six games back in the American League Central. With the divisions largest payroll and World Series expectations, they were called the most disappointing team in baseball.
Then, it was fair.
Now, it is untrue.
If the Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox Saturday (MLB on FOX, 3:30 p.m. ET)...
Improvement by Fister and Scherzer could be key to Tigers' second half
Two consecutive solid starts by Doug Fister may have taken some of the pressure off the Detroit Tigers to give up a prime prospect to get a rotation-stabilizing pitcher. The Tigers don't have a bad rotation, but they have a two-tier goal this year -- win the AL Central and the World Series -- and what they have right now might not be enough. Detroit wouldn't be ashamed...
Game 2012.93: Angels at Tigers
Detroit Tigers, 48-44, 2 1/2 games behind Chicago.
Doug Fister had his best start of the season, and after two good starts in a row he looks like the Fister from the 2011 pennant run. Fister gave up a solo HR to Albert Pujols in the 1st, and only allowed a single and 2 walks after that, until he was pulled in the 9th at 108 pitches. Fister struck out 10, which hopefully wonâ€â...
Rick Porcello’s Gem Lifts Detroit Tigers to First Place
The Tigers have been mentioned in pretty much every trade rumor involving a starting pitcher for the better part of a month and a half, but their rotation has taken a big step forward over the past few weeks.
Rick Porcello has tended to be the whipping boy of the rotation amongst Tigers fans. He doesn’t strike out a lot of batters, and it seems like when he’s off, he’s way...

The Home Run Derby Apparently Didn’t Mess With Prince Fielder’s Swing
He hasn’t hit a home run since the All-Star break, but we’re six games into the season’s second-half and Prince Fielder shows no ill-effects of participating in (and winning) the Home Run Derby. So far he’s hitting for a slash line of .391/.500/.435 in the second half. It’s a small sample size, surely, but if it was the Derby that was going to be the culprit for a post...
Leyland downplays showdown with White Sox
There's a reason Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland downplays Detroit's "showdown series" with the first-place Chicago White Sox this weekend. He should. It's a three-game set and even if one team should sweep the other it will not seriously damage the chances of the other to finish first in the AL Central or be a threat to earn a Wild Card berth. There...
Clutch hitting leads to Tigers victory
Two-out runs, Jim Leyland likes to say, are golden. Get enough of them, and they also translate into wins. The Tigers had a knack of scoring with two outs last season, especially when they surged to the top of
the AL Central around the All-Star break. They are doing it again. Detroit entered Friday night's 4-2 victory over the first-place Chicago White Sox tied with...
Porcello's pitching propels Tigers to first place
DETROIT (AP) -- Rick Porcello pitched brilliantly into the ninth inning, and the Detroit Tigers took over first place in the AL Central on Saturday with a 7-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox.
Brennan Boesch hit a three-run homer and Austin Jackson drove in the other four runs for the Tigers, who lead the White Sox by a half-game in the Central. Detroit was six games out after...

Tigers 5, Angels 1
Max Scherzer struck out nine and got plenty of run support as Miguel Cabrera and Alex Avila homered to help the Detroit Tigers beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-1 Thursday.
Detroit won the four-game series and has 10 victories in its last 12 games. The Angels have won just five of their last 13 games.
Scherzer (9-5) gave up only one run - on Mike Trout's homer in the sixth inning...
Ranking the Detroit Tigers’ Potential Trade Deadline Moves in 2012

Game 2012.92: Angels at Tigers
Detroit Tigers, 47-44, 3 1/2 games behind Chicago.
Alice Cooper threw out the ceremonial first pitch before last night’s game, and from that point on it was Welcome To My Nightmare for young Jacob Turner, who bombed.
An outburst of offense was predicted, but I didn’t quite have that in mind (the Tiger offense politely refrained from getting involved).
But the good news is that...
AL Central seeking starting pitchers
Tuesday night, it became apparent that the three American League Central contenders have the same trade-deadline need.
A starting pitcher.
In Detroit, Jacob Turner the Tigers top pitching prospect surrendered seven earned runs over two innings in a disastrous outing against the Los Angeles Angels.
While the Angels were battering Turner, the Tampa Bay Rays with one of the meeker...
