Found January 31, 2013 on Metstradamus:
"The reason we haven't spent the money is not because of Fred Wilpon. It's because of me." -Sandy Alderson Well, that's a fine sentiment. And I'm sure the Wilpons appreciate that GM Sandy Alderson is willing to stand in front of the season ticket holders and take the bullet for them. Not that I believe it for a second. Because I'd buy it if the decision revolved around big free agents like Michael Bourn, who would cost a draft pick (maybe), or a guy like Nick Swisher, who frankly isn't worth the money. But when Sandy goes out and signs Pedro Feliciano, who hasn't pitched in two years, to a minor league deal, then signs serviceable yet injury prone 37-year-old Scott Atchison to a minor league deal, and now 40-year-old LaTroy Hawkins to a minor league deal ... all while Jon Rauch sits at home wondering what the hell he ever did wrong (unless he just plain doesn't want to come back, who knows) ... how the hell am I supposed to beli...

Mets add depth to pen with LaTroy Hawkins, Scott Atchinson

While a sizable amount of press has been devoted to the possible acquisitions of Michael Bourn or Brian Wilson, Sandy Alderson has methodically been adding pitchers to the organization’s choices for the 2013 iteration of the Mets bullpen staff. One such signing is the January 31st signing of LaTroy Hawkins. Hawkins, age 40, is an 18 year veteran of the major leagues and now...

Mets still in the relief market..

Jon Heyman just tweeted that the Mets are still in the relief market after signing LaTroy Hawkins.  Like I said as long as Hawkins isn't the primary guy they sign to back-up Francisco then its a very good move.  It appears that the Mets will bring in another former closer whether it's Wilson, Krod or even a return of Rauch...

Mets Announce Minor League Deal With RHP LaTroy Hawkins

The Mets announced they have signed free-agent RHP LaTroy Hawkins to a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training. If Hawkins makes the team, he will earn a base salary of $1 million with chance to earn more in incentives. The 40-year old Hawkins spent last year with the Los Angeles Angels where he went 2-3 with a 3.49 ERA. In 42 innings pitched he posted a 4.9 strikeout rate...

Hawkins, 40, posted a 3.64 ERA in 42 innings for the Los Angeles Angels in 2012. The Mets will become Hawkins' 10th organization should he make the roster.

Mets add LaTroy Hawkins to bullpen mix, still looking for more help

The New York Mets continued their attempt to bolster a bullpen that ranked second to last in baseball in earned run average last season by agreeing to a deal with 40-year-old veteran right-hander LaTroy Hawkins. #bbpBox_296873892558041089 a { text-decoration:none; color:#B82B2D; }#bbpBox_296873892558041089 a:hover { text-decoration:underline; } @LaTroyHawkins32 has signed a minor...

Mets sign LaTroy Hawkins to Minor League deal

Yesterday the Mets announced that they had added former Boston relief pitcher Scott Atchison on a Minor League contract, and today the bullpen bolstering continued. The Mets reached an agreement with right-handed veteran LaTroy Hawkins on a Minor League deal that comes with an invitation to Spring Training. GM Tweeps, Excited to be part of the #Mets Fam GreatTradition, and Great...

Sandy Alderson on the Mets Off-Season

Sandy Alderson spoke to Mets season ticket holders yesterday, and told them the team not spending on players via free agency this season was his decision, not the Wilpons. Here is most meaningful quote (captured by Adam Rubin of ESPN New York): “We understand what the market dictates and we have to be prepared to exist in that market. Am I going to recommended that we sit here...

Alderson Says He Is Responsible For Lack Of Spending, Not Ownership

Mets season ticket holders were gathered at the Caesar’s Club at Citi Field tonight, where Sandy Alderson and his front office fielded questions about a variety of issues. Adam Rubin of ESPN New York did a nice job of covering the event and retweeting some of the quotes from those who were on hand. Regarding the lack of spending this offseason, Sandy Alderson insisted this was...

Links of the Day 1/31/13

Oh good, it’s cold again. That’s exciting. The top 30 teams not to have played in the Super Bowl. The X-Games have claimed the life of a competitor. Caleb Moore was injured in a snowmobile crash. Latroy Hawkins continues to play professional baseball. SCOREBOARD Copa del Sol Rosenborg played three matches, losing 2-0 to CSKA Moscow, 1-0 to Shakhtar Donetsk and winning in penalty...

Links of the Day 2/1/13

Sorry about yesterday. We’ll try to have an actual, real post today. Since I mentioned Latroy Hawkins yesterday, another former Twin bull pen pitcher has found work. Matt Capps to the Indians. The fact that this guy didn’t get away probably goes a long way to explaining why his NASCAR career didn’t work out. The Kansas City Royals are on someone’s “enemies list”. They...

Alderson Hopes Collins’ Lame Duck Status Won’t Become An Issue

Last night, Sandy Alderson revisited the subject of Terry Collins, who is in the final year of his contract and heads into this season as a lame duck. “I think it will only be an issue if Terry makes it an issue or I make it an issue,” Alderson said. “I hope we don’t let the media make it an issue, although it’s a question that I’m sure will be asked, especially early...

Alderson Mets still have OF options

Even after the Marlon Byrd signing Marc Carig of Newsday tweeted that Sandy Alderson says the Mets still have options for the outfield.  Many have speculated in the last few hours that Byrd along with the other outfield candidates have essentially ended any pursuit of Michael Bourn. Don't forget the Mets signed veteran Fred Lewis last season and tucked him away in AAA until...

From Left Field: Can The Strategy In The Bullpen Work?

The Mets seem to be rolling the dice when it comes to bringing in veterans on minor-league deals to compete for spots in the bullpen. The team will likely head north in about two months with seven relievers, but spring training will decide who those lucky seven are. LaTroy Hawkins and Scott Atchison were recently signed to minor-league deals. Do these guys have enough left in the...
