The Diamondbacks flexed their muscles on a 10-game trip, and the final game provided the exclamation point. Jason Kubel hit two two-run home runs and Wil Nieves hit one as the D-backs earned a split of a four-game series with a 6-3 victory over Pittsburgh on Thursday. Kubel has 25 home runs, third in the National League, and is three short of his career high set with Minnesota in 2009. Kubel's 77 RBIs are second in the league. Nieves hit a home run in his first start with the D-backs after joining the team Monday, when Henry Blanco was placed on the disabled list because of a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb. "It's huge," admitted Nieves, who hit a high breaking pitch from Pirates left-hander Wandy Rodriguez into the left field seats with two out in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the D-backs a 4-3 lead. "We're fighting for a spot in the playoffs. Helping the team any way I can is what I am trying to do. I was a little nerv...

Collmenter goes on DL; Bloomquist's back OK

PHOENIX -- The Diamondbacks placed Josh Collmenter on the disabled list with ulcers Friday, at the same time apparently moving into the clear with Willie Bloomquist. Collmenter did not feel well after arriving home from the D-backs' road trip Thursday night, manager Kirk Gibson said, necessitating a roster move before the start of a three-game homestand against the NL East-leading...

D-backs place Collmenter on DL

The Arizona Diamondbacks placed right-hander Josh Collmenter on the 15-day disabled list on Friday with ulcers. Collmenter started the season in the rotation but demoted to the bullpen after four rocky starts. He returned to the rotation to make five starts and has posted a 3-1 record and a 2.41 ERA in his last 18 appearances. Collmenter is 3-3 overall with a 4.24 ERA in 22 games...

D-backs' farm system rich ... and staying put

When general manager Kevin Towers passed on trading deadline deals that would have thinned the Diamondbacks minor league system, the recent performance of Patrick Corbin was the sort of thing that informed his thinking. Corbin has made two quality starts since returning from Class AAA Reno to the rotation Aug. 1. He beat the Los Angeles Dodgers with six shutout innings that day...

D-backs catcher Miguel Montero loses bat in stands, hits fan in leg (Video)

Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero's bat flew into the stands and hit a female fan in the leg during his fourth inning at-bat in Friday night's MLB game at Chase Field against the Washington Nationals. Montero swung at a 1-0 pitch and it went flying about six rows back in the stands behind the D-backs dugout. The female fan grabbed the bat after it bounced...

Kubel homers twice as D-backs down Pirates

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Jason Kubel homered twice, Joe Saunders pitched seven effective innings and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-3 on Thursday. Both of Kubel's home runs immediately followed hits by Aaron Hill. Wil Nieves also hit a two-run homer in his Diamondbacks debut. Saunders (6-8) retired 14 consecutive batters in the middle innings. He allowed two...

Diamondbacks place Collmenter on DL

The Arizona Diamondbacks placed reliever Josh Collmenter on the 15-day disabled list with ulcers, AZCentral.com reported Friday. Manager Kirk Gibson said Collmenter became ill on Thursday. Collmenter is 3-3 with a 4.24 ERA in 22 appearances. The Diamondbacks recalled right-hander Brad Bergesen from Class AAA Reno to take Collmenter's spot on the roster. Bergesen was selected...

Red Sox sign OF Podsednik after trading him

The Boston Red Sox have signed veteran outfielder Scott Podsednik just over a week after trading him to Arizona. Podsednik batted .387 with one home run and seven RBIs in 19 games for the Red Sox before being dealt to the Diamondbacks on July 31. He was released by Arizona after declining an assignment to Triple-A Reno. Podsednik, who was batting ninth and playing left field Friday...

Sox to send Kalish down to make room for Podsednik

News came out yesterday that the Sox re-signed Scott Podsednik -- sent to Arizona in the Craig Breslow deal, but immediately released -- for the remainder of the season. The perplexing move was seemingly injury insurance, but now Dan Roche says the Sox are assigning Podsednik to the big club and sending down Ryan Kalish. I'm inclined to say this move is insane, but the motivation...

Nats Head To Arizona As They Continue Their Road Trip Out West

Not only do the Washington Nationals (69-43) comfortably posses the best record in baseball, they also have the best road record of MLB teams (37-21), which they will try to add on to this weekend against the Arizona Diamondbacks (57-55). In the past, the Nationals and the Diamondbacks have been pretty evenly matched, splitting their wins in contests between the two teams just about...

OPS Fantasy Leagues: Cry Me A River

Justin Upton – This year his season has been tearing up my heart. He’s posting the lowest OPS of his career since he was a rookie in 2007. Since that time, he’s oscillated between great years in 2009 (.899 OPS) and 2011 (.898 OPS) and merely good years in 2008 (.816 OPS) and 2010 (.799 OPS). Currently, he’s producing a .756 OPS, but there are many signs pointing to a potential...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Arizona Diamondbacks – Game 111

I would be lying if I said these last few games instilled a ton of confidence.  Maybe the bullpen is just going through a bad stretch, I don’t know.  Still two more runs allowed by the pen is at least slightly concerning and something to keep an eye on.   First Pitch:  4:05 PM EST [...]
