Tonight, we were supposed to get the marquee pitching matchup of Trevor Bauer vs Danny Hultzen in the AA Southern League. But, it's not going to happen: Bauer has been promoted to AAA Reno. Bauer is the second of three dominant starters in AA Mobile to get called up, following Pat Corbin's promotion to the majors at the end of April.

Bauer was dominating the Southern League, and it was just a matter of time before he got the boost from AA. In 48 1/3 innings, Bauer had a 1.68 ERA, 60 strikeouts, 26 walks, and just one homer allowed this season. The walk total is a little high, but for a guy who throws as hard as Bauer, that's to be expected from time to time. His final start is likely what earned him the promotion, as he went seven innings against Chattanooga, allowing six hits and one unearned run, walking one and striking out nine.

Bauer's new home (for the time being at least) will be AAA Reno of the Pacific Coast League, which is a hitters haven. To let you know how much of a hitters league the PCL is, the lowest team ERA is New Orleans at 3.58, and Sacramento is the only other team under 4.00. Only four of the 16 teams in the league have an OPS under .700, and four have an OPS above .800. Yeah, hitting is king in the PCL, and if Bauer can dominate at a level comparable to the way he did in Mobile, he'll soon have a home in the majors. The thing is, all five current members of Arizona's rotation are pitching well, with Joe Saunders's 4.02 FIP being the highest of the bunch. Arizona doesn't have a massive need for starting pitching at this point in time, and they really don't need to rush Bauer to the majors.
