Over the summer and entering the offseason, it appeared the Arizona Diamondbacks would be trading outfielder Justin Upton. However, rumors cooled as teams were reportedly unable or unwilling to reach Arizona’s asking price. Now, following the Diamondbacks’ signing of outfielder Cody Ross, the team is “very much open” to talking about trading Upton with interested clubs, according to Buster Olney of ESPN. Arizona very much open again to talking about trading Justin Upton w/other teams, and not surprisingly, their specific demands have changed. — Buster Olney (@Buster_ESPN) January 3, 2013 Following the signing of Ross, the Diamondbacks were expected to move one of their extra outfielders; with the most likely candidates were Upton and Jason Kubel. At this point, Olney has spoken with officials who are convinced the team will trade Upton, not Kubel, this winter. Olney adds that the Diamondbacks have viewed the Seattle Mariners as a possible landing spot for Upton. The Texas Rangers and Atlanta Braves have also been tied to the slugger this offseason. What’s Next For Football In 2013?

2012 was a vintage year for football. Spain won another international tournament, Real pinched La Liga from Barcelona and the Premier League was more exciting than ever. But what will the big stories be in 2013?Creative Commons image courtesy of Andrea SartoratiMessi Or Ronaldo? It seems unfair to constantly compare one to the other but when we’re living in a world where two players...

Player Profile #189: Cody Ross | OF | ARI

Cody Ross is boring. He’s been the same player every year for like five years now. He’s not good enough to really land on anyone’s radar, but he’s always been good enough to stick around in fantasy leagues of almost any format. He’s batted between .260 and .270 four times in the last five years, he’s hit either 14 or 22 homers four times in the last five years (and he...

Justin Upton Is Not a Park Effect Mirage

Big news everyone – Justin Upton is still on the trade block. He has been for about three years now, and he will continue to be until he is mercifully traded to a team that wants him more than Arizona seems to. With yesterday’s reports about Upton’s availability, more than a few people on Twitter asked me about Upton’s home/road splits, and whether or not we should expect...

Report: Justin Upton Drawing Trade Interest From Mariners, Rangers, Braves

After signing Cody Ross, it seems more a matter of when, not if, the Diamondbacks will trade Justin Upton or Jason Kubel. So far, Upton is drawing far more interest as a trade target from MLB teams. The Mariners, Rangers and Braves are the latest teams inquiring about the star outfielder, according to FOX Sports. The Diamondbacks have an influx of talent in the corner outfield...

Upton for Headley? D-backs still talking deal

Justin Upton for Chase Headley? The Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres have held on-and-off discussions about a trade involving those players since July, but the talks have failed to progress, according to major league sources. The Diamondbacks, however, continue to discuss Upton with other clubs, including the Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners, sources say, while also...

Sources say Headley for Upton swap has been discussed

You just never know what you might come across on the internet. Today a brief post on MLBTR really caught my attention. Citing “major league sources,” Zach Links writes that a potential deal involving Padres 3B Chase Headley going to the Diamondbacks in exchange for OF Justin Upton has been discussed on and off since last July. That rumored deal probably made a lot more sense...

Phillies and Olney’s Top 10s: Are You Worried?

Buster Olney of ESPN has produced a pretty fun series of articles this week. Day by day, Olney has posted on his Insider blog Top 10 lists for infield, outfield, rotation, line-ups, and Top 10 overall teams. Olney’s rankings are comprehensive but can be confusing; for instance, the teams with the two highest ranked line-ups, the Angels and Brewers, are not in the overall Top 10...

Olney: Reds boast sixth-best outfield unit in baseball

Jay Bruce in right, Shin-Soo Choo in center, and Ryan Ludwick in left -- this appears to be the outfield trio manager Dusty Baker will be penciling in on a regular basis in 2013. Chris Heisey, Xavier Paul, and perhaps Billy Hamilton will be called upon to patrol the GABP grasses at times next season, as well. So, how does Cincinnati's outfielding unit compare to those...

Olney: Reds feature top infield unit in the National League, third best in MLB

Phillips and the Reds grabbed the top spot in the NL It's no small secret that Dusty Baker has one of baseball's best infields at his disposal. It has been that way for several years now thanks to the likes of Brandon Phillips, Joey Votto, Scott Rolen and others who have manned the dirt at GABP along the way. With that in mind, the fact that Buster Olney dubbed...

Olney doesn't believe Reds bullpen will be as strong in 2013

ESPN's Buster Olney wrapped up his offseason rankings series by unveiling the top 10 bullpens on Saturday. The Reds made an appearance, just as they did in the the other five lists, but they didn't rank as highly as one may have thought. Cincinnati settled for the No. 8 spot despite leading the majors in bullpen ERA last season. Here is how Olney justified his pick: ...

First Pitch: The Impact of Losing the Astros

Buster Olney has been doing his top ten lists at ESPN, naming his top rotations, infields, outfields, and so on. The Pirates haven’t been on any list, but I did see something interesting at the bottom of his infield article (Insider subscription required). Olney had a simulation from AccuScore showing the impact of the Houston Astros leaving the NL Central for the AL West. In the...

Dodgers Rumors: Mariners Asking About Andre Ethier

The Seattle Mariners have called the Los Angeles Dodgers repeatedly about outfielder Andre Ethier, according to Buster Olney of ESPN. The Seattle Mariners have called the Los Angeles Dodgers repeatedly about Andre Ethier, and while the Dodgers' intention is to open the season with him as their right fielder, they have told other teams all winter that they're...

Los Angeles Dodgers Sign LHP J.P. Howell

The Los Angeles Dodgers have signed left-handed reliever J.P. Howell to a one-year contract worth $2.85 million, as reported by Buster Olney of ESPN. Jon Heyman of CBS Sports added that Howell’s new deal gives him the potential to earn another $1.2 million in performance bonuses in 2013. The precise salary for Howell with the Dodgers is $2.85 million, in his one-year deal...
